The Old Folks Home

I finally got rid of all my extra roosters and lost a couple pullets. We also have some older hens that are not laying as much as they used to. So I guess I will let the broody's hatch what they want come spring.

I am waiting to see if I get a Pressure canner for Christmas--and then some old hens will be canned chicken!

I had the kids move chickens around today.... So that in a month I can start collecting and hatching ....

We are missing an $80 chicken.

How and what breed?

A Bantam Wheaten Ameraucana. I can no longer remember (I never paid attention) if she was a blue wheaten or regular wheaton.

She was from Pips and Peeps shipped eggs. Super painful difficult to get eggs from pips and oeeos since EVERYONE wants them.

As to how.... Sheeeeesh.... My kids care for the chickens.

Bummer.
Maybe it will show up at dawn.
I have found several the day after they escape on top of their coop

Alaskan are you sure she is lost, have the kids turn out their pockets. I bet they were the last ones to see her.

Good hope, but my area is so predator rich, if I don't find the critter within about an hour it is gone forever. :(

I have no idea how anyone free ranges. :idunno

I still have 3 females and one male... So the second I think they are pure (I just today removed the d'anver cockerels from the bantam coop)I will just hatch everything they lay. Unfortunately the rooster is NOT very fertile (he isn't from pips and peeps). Last year with just a pair I hatched every single egg.... Or tried to....

Even with just a PAIR, there were a bunch of infertile eggs, also a decent number of fertile eggs had trouble making it to hatch, then making it to adulthood.

I am not sure why.

And then of the few that made it to adulthood most were male

I am thinking that this year I will:
- trim fluffy bottoms
- add more supplements/ good stuff

Good grief...... That means even though I tried to hatch every single egg from my one female last year...... I only ended up with TWO, yep, TWO new adult girls. One of those is lost, and then I have one pips and peeps girl.
