My thoughts on the broody business:

Brooder indoors: dusty and smelly, takes ages before getting chicks out.

Separated nest: works well, but trouble when you want to integrate to the rest of the flock. Also, a separator makes cleaning difficult.

Chicks in coop with gen pop: risk of chicks getting injured, but broodies tend to keep them safe. This has been my absolute favorite method, because we've had good mommies. Most of our birds are mutts with some landrace in them though, so that means good maternal instincts. The ones we've had like this have been the easiest to take care of, since they can share feeders and waterers with the rest of the flock. I've never bothered with chick feed, our chicks get the same home mixed grain mixes as the others, and we serve calcium on the side. Haven't had a single chick suffocate or anything, so this works for us.
