Ducklings give new meaning to old sayings:

"Suck It Up" What they do to their food.

"Let It All Out: What they do to their food after they have processed it for a while.

Can you guess I have some new ducklings to care for?

Not to mention sometimes life flips you the bird.

Exhausting day yesterday. One broody decided 2 chicks was enough and left the nest, eggs in the bator and I got 7. Only a couple of eggs from the Sportsman hatched and then the other broody's eggs started hatching. Ended up bringing her crate in the house so I didn't have to go back out in the dark. She still has a few eggs to go. Some of the other girls pushed out the eggs I set her on and added to the nest, so who knows whos long this wait will be. One more broody left to hatch Saturday and maybe sooner. One completely smashed her eggs due Monday. Just set more eggs and ran out of places to put broodies to hatch out more I have here. Oh and I forgot, so not I have to go set up a mini hoop coop, for the breeding pair of Silkied AMs that are coming. On my way out to make the frame. Panels are already done and just have to be placed and fastened down.

Last day of school out here. Been busy with Dakotah and Makayla comes home tonight for the weekend. They aren't out of school yet, but then she'll be back all summer. Man I'm tired after just thinking about that. LOL

OK, silly question of the day.How do you bathe a chick? That late egg hatched (well after I pealed him out of the egg) is doing great but is covered in some sort of goop that has dried into crusty "stuff" Any ideas??

Hey! That is not a silly question at all. I usually will run a small bowl of warm water with a few drops of baby shampoo in the water and gently rinse the stuck egg and any residue off of the chick using a cotton ball. Then I wrap it in a paper towel and dry it off a bit. After that I put it in an incubator that I use for just hatched chicks to keep it nice and warm. The main thing is not to let the chick get chilled. I can't stand to see them all crusty. This helps them to dry off nice an fluffy!

Yup. I'm no prude but it is embarrassing when I have people over and the boys are running around letting it all hang out.


The good news is the only slug I've seen so far this year was down by the mailbox (where the ducks don't go). Usually the slugs are so thick you can't help but step on them on your way through the yard. They usually eat some of my seedlings, too. NOT THIS YEAR. Gooooo duckies!
