The Old Folks Home

Let's let Bama talk to his adjuster, make decisions, get rebuilt and get his incubator empty before sending eggs. I know how he feels. Getting suddenly wiped out is a real shock to the system.

Bama, I hope you have a place to put NYD hatch chicks.

Weather alert, there is supposed to be some big bright thing in the sky today. That will be a strange sight.
We officially had 12" from this last storm. The 27th was the 3rd highest rainfall for any single day in history - well the 28th beat that with an all time high. December - wettest December on record. 2015 - wettest year on record.
Interstate 70 has been reopened but now Interstate 44 is closed. New record crests coming tomorrow thru Friday on the Mississippi and several tributaries.
Major sandbagging efforts going on across the region. Some places that never needed it before. A lot of floodwalls and levees will be topped this week. Some already have been - that's what closed I-70.
Winter is now coming. It's 32 right now and lows in the low 20s the rest of the week.
I hope I have time to get at least half of my heated auto water system up and running before the extreme cold sets in.

Hatch update. BabyBear got off the eggs Sunday night I went out to check on her and the eggs were room temp which is really bad since that means bout 55 degrees. I scooped up all the eggs and ran them to the Silkie coop where sunshine (Buff Silkie) had gone Broody 4 days eairlier and I gave her 2 egg to keep her on the nest. i pushed the eggs under her and hoped for the best 1 was peeping 1 was moving earlier but not any more too cold I think and 3 I couldnt tell. So this morning nothing but the peeper was peeping again. Later I checked and found a wet chick on the straw the Frizzle on the eggs and Sunshine in a corner not in the nest. She was not moving I grabbed her and heated her with my breath and peep! dropped food bucket on ground and went inside warmed her ans she is doing great now. went out to check on SS and peeping. 2:40 this am Aurora got a friend and there is another pipped egg in the nest. But it is in the 30's tonight and I could not risk her abandoning the chick again. BabyBear is a great Mom she is keeping her 6 safe and warm even Sits on the food bowl so the chicks don't get chilled while eating and then goes back to her chosen corner with them to digest. I plan to see if BabyBear will take the chicks back once I am sure they are all hatched that will hatch. Edit to add @ 5:45 this guy was in the straw. Still not seeing anything in the last 2.
Soooooo sweet!

We lost a hickory tree in the storm yesterday. We are thankful it fell away from our house and did not do any damage. The line of shrubs it fell on is our property line. No damage was done on our neighbor's side either. I took the picture out of our bedroom window....had it fallen toward the house, the top of the tree would have hit our bedroom. We are so thankful no damage was done.
We have a dusting of snow on top of the rain, sleet, slush from yesterday so the drive to work will be interesting.
Stay safe and have a great day OF!!

oooo.......I see some straight boards in that fallen tree's future......

glad it wasn't damaging.

Never could crawl through... but have reached in and opened the door.

Logic by not locking... anything I could lose from the house can be replaced. A Sliding glass door or window would put me in a world of hurt. Just the sliders would be 1400 a person or contractor to replace one would be another 2000 at least.

I was quoted 10,000 from one contractor.

Needless to say If I lost one that one would get boarded up by me.

deb

That is what I tell my wife about her car when it is parked at the house at night.
First, we live in a rural area. Plenty of people live down the road so there are cars but there is nothing of value in the car to steal.
Second, there is no garage so there is nothing they could get into by breaking into the car (ie garage door opener).
Third, I think the deductible to replace a broken window would be higher than the cost to do so.

Let them open the door and find out for FREE that there is nothing to steal!!!! Fortunately we haven't had nighttime car break-ins around here but about a year ago there were a couple of guys casing and breaking into houses during the day. Mostly houses farther from the road where they would be hard to see, ours is only about 40'. The sheriff set up a neighborhood watch meeting, with the admonition that someone should stay at the house. Makes sense given they would be advertizing "free stuff" for the duration of the meeting otherwise!

Deb those guys are crooks. It shouldn't cost anywhere near 2K let alone 10K to put in a sliding glass door. It would be a 1 day job for ME, a seasoned carpenter can do it in half that time.

Bama
Try a go fund me page.
My kids tell me it is the latest trend people post all kinds of things

you might could raise enough to rebuild and clean up any other water damage once you dry out.

I think the "fund me" sites are generally looking to help people with massive medical bills, major house losses or a business start up that they think is viable. The latter is likely the hardest since most people would want to see a business plan, etc. But it doesn't hurt to try.

That's the spirit

That is very fortunate.
I had a big tree fall in front of my brooder house with chicks in it. It did no damage but I had to cut it up before I could get in to care for the chicks.

I don't live in the best part of town. (a long walk distance from Ferguson) But, I leave my carriage house, cellar and sometimes the house unlocked. (house is usually locked when we leave for any length of time), We don't lock the cars. After almost 20 years there have only been 2 thefts and nothing from inside.
About 8 years ago someone stole a big compressor in the middle of the day from the back patio when I went in to have lunch.
About 2 weeks ago someone got into my son's car at night and stole a coat. That was concerning since it was the first time someone came up here at night.
We lived on the old family farm just a mile up the road and never locked anything. I had a big garden and sold produce on the honor system. I worked days and my wife would pick veggies in the morning before it got hot, put them on a harvest table at the end of the drive with prices, a scale and a cigar box for money.
I was never ripped off. One day I came home and the box was empty. I thought, "well it was bound to happen eventually". As I was putting everything away and picked up the cigar box, all the money was under the box. I guess someone hid it for me.

CC: I have a 4x8 ft brooder. It should buy me enough time
That's great. How many eggs are cooking?

Dude so sorry to hear about your chickens and coops. Wow that is just terrible. I hope your weather starts getting better. No more rain for you until things dry out.
