I was voluntold to work holidays, extra shifts, ballgames, etc. for years and years. I finally am at a point that I don't have to do it anymore and I don't. This is not because of my attitude about seniority, but because I just can't hold up to do it any more. I have had many weekends where I went to work at 11pm for a midnight shift on three or four hours of sleep, got off patrol at 8am, reported for my parade post at 9am, worked the parade until I had to report to another intersection at 10am. I (we, I was not the only one, it was nearly every off duty officer on the force) would direct traffic for three or four hours (depending on the time of kickoff) then report to the stadium to work a section at the game. I would then return to my intersection at five minutes till the end of the game to direct the traffic as everyone left. Keep in mind that all the while, I was dealing with people who were excited, drunk, irritated, lost, drunk, children, elderly, drunk, angry, frustrated, drunk, kind, rude... and did I mention, drinking? We stayed on the post game intersection until the traffic was back to somewhat of a normal level, then I could go home, or to the closest couch, to grab a couple of hours before I had to be back at HQ for my next shift which ended at 8am the next morning, BUT not before being stopped by one exausted little old lady and her husband who approached me as I was just about to pull away by saying, "We're sorry to bother you, but we can't seem to find our car." Yes, ma'am, I'll help you........
I worked as the manager of a retail pet shop right out of college. In that position, I (like SCG) would work on Saturdays so that my part time, college student, employees could be off to go to the games, concerts, and other events, but in return, I expected them to be there when I needed them. I was strict, but fair. Kinda' like I am with my kids, now!
I will be sitting with my sister all day today, Happy New Year, Old Folks!
