The Old Folks Home

True... I do prefer the crazies that I am currently surrounded with... And I hate change.

Which explains the current significant other issues

I spent 3 winters in South Central Alaska, a winter in New Hampshire, and 4 winters in Omaha, NE. Right now I'm in the middle of Northern Rocky Mountains...and it's winter.
This winter marks the end of my 70th Summer, and while I like cold winters and warm summers, I'm getting a bit tired of hauling firewood when the snow's up to my belt loops!

I wrote a detailed response to @Beer can and how beautiful his area is. How much I love mountains and hate cold. BYC ate my reply. Anyhoo...I sure enjoyed the feedback.
I'd talk more chicken, but I'm pretty boring in that department. I don't breed or hatch, just have nice plain LB hens, so I'll live vicariously through those who do.

Ieee...I just couldn't do that. I left Mi winters 20 years ago and never looked back. I truly miss the lifestyle and the people though.

@Mutt Farm & @Beer can Here's a site I've been using to look around: http://www.landsofamerica.com/ You can also narrow it down by state and even county...

I've also used this site, though is a little skewed and "general" in nature and doesn't always take indivdual issues into account, such as I'm retired military so how would that pension be taxed etc.
http://www.kiplinger.com/tool/retirement/T055-S001-state-by-state-guide-to-taxes-on-retirees/ For example, in KY, even though there is state income tax, they don't tax military retirement under 40 something thousand dollars and they also don't tax social security, both of which will be my sole income sources in the not too distant future.

So since KY sales tax is a flat 6% and land is cheaper, it may work out better for me than TX. I found one property that was within my price window that was like 60 acres surrounded by the Danial Boone national forest... Now THAT would have been sweet. I'd also like to hunt on my own property so I've been looking at the various state regs there as well. I can take 4 (white tail) deer per year in both TX and KY. I can't see that I'd need more meat than that... It's just me. So I'm also trying to concentrate my searches in the best hunting counties.

Up state NY is beautiful... but like you said... you are "owned" by the idiots in the big city down south and as such have to live with whatever stupidity they force on you. I'm really surprised the rest of the state hasn'ty divorced from them and named them something like the district of idiocy... sister to the OTHER district even further south, that is home to the nations collective stupidity commonly referred to as the federal govt.

I HAVE looked at GA as a potential, but retirement income is still taxed until after 62. There is also a 4% state sales tax plus up to an additional 4% local sales tax. Also, for the type and size land I've been looking for/at, it's more expensive there. And just as an aside, it's also the home state where the walking dead is filmed... You never know, that stuff may be contagious

Bottom line, there's a LOT to consider, and the final decision won't really be made till this place is sold and what's available on the market then.

Greetings @Old Philosopher ! Welcome to BYC! I was born and raised in New England and did 2 tours in Maine. I've been to the Anchorage area of AK. I love the woods, mnts and seasons. I don't particularly like intense heat, but have less tolerance to deep cold and snow than I used to.

Lol! I had the same thing happen this morning when I got to work, same post to you and latestarter, but with some rants to latestarter on our city influx of people who want to change our area, I did rate it 50 50, we have some great city people neighbors here who love this place for the same reasons we do, then we have some others....interested only in their equity and resale value of their new homes, WE live here WE don't care about things that will raise our taxes even more...Good thing it didn't post, it was a rant. I think it didn't post cause of my crappy phone though.

I love the changing seasons in West Virginia. We experience a full gamut of temps. The older I get, the more I dislike the cold, but spring rolls around, and its ok for another year. Can't imagine living anywhere flat. I love our mountains and hills.
