The Old Folks Home

Dh was talking about me getting busy collecting eggs, and hatching us some birds.

Ooooooooh! :ya Hatching!!!! :drool

I have eggs that are supposed to hatch now, AND NO PIPS!!! :barnie make them pip already!!!!

By the way, this hatch is happening in Sally, thank goodness, loads of space, and I have all four types segregated.

Awesome!! C'mon, Chickies!!!

I'm still running both of the Genesis Hovas I replaced her with, lol...

Anyone want to give me a basic rundown on the difference in hatching chicken eggs vs duck eggs, besides a weeks time?

Regular ducks? Not muscovy?

For regular ducks, spritz once a day with water from a spray bottle. (I have heard)

For Muscovy, which I have done.. Exact same as chicken, just a horrid bunch longer.

I hatch Calls... :)

We have very high ambient humidity here, so I usually don't add any water til first pip... I also run the bator slightly higher, 100 to 100.5 and they seem to do much better at that temp... if possible, hand turning them is always best... and if your air cells are not getting big enough, give the eggs a misting of water each day til they are back on track...

Oh, and ducks take much, much longer from pip to out of the shell hatched than chicks...

Truthfully, I don't know what kind of ducks they are. I didn't see the parents. A man I know asked me to try to hatch them for him. From his description, they may be Khaki Cambels.
Hatch them like chicken eggs--Yes, they take a week longer and are slow from pip to zip.

Spritzing can't hurt and the cool down cycle helps ducks too. spritzing is more important for goose eggs.

Every time I have hatched ducks, they hatched a couple of days early so watch for that and for lockdown! I missed lockdown once and had several of them riding the auto turner....It was very funny to see.
