Anyone know the actual genetics behind cross beak?

Simple recessive?

I hatched a chick, at one week of age it started getting cross beak... I culled it.

So... I cull the mom? (I do know which hen it came from)

I am pretty sure it is not genetic. From what I found researching it, it does not follow recessive or dominant genetic patterns of inheritance.

It could be a sign of illness in the flock or parasites. It can also be a sign of the the flock being in inbred--It happens to a lot of heritage breeds.

It is also possible that it is just a birth defect--something went wrong with cell division.

culling is up to you but you will likely not have more hatch with cross beak. Not everything is genetic.

Hummm.... Mom is a mutt, dad is my snazzy expensive Black Ameraucana

Chicks are still inside, and none are sick, so I see no way they could have parasites etc.

I did have more dead in shell in that batch than I should have.,, incubator fluctuated a bit too much. (They joys of heating with a wood stove)

I just hate, hate hatching defects..,, a big reason I sold my Marans :sick

What they found in the study is that around 1% of chicks will have cross beak--It just happens and is not genetic. The incubation could have been a cause.

Alaskan, I couldn't help but notice you culled the mom but, didn't think it could have come from the father & culled him. Females always get the blame. It's is your fault Alaskan.
