Happy and sad news on the farm here this weekend. Momma Pekin hatched 2 babies so far. She trampled one to death yesterday, though. She still has 6 eggs under her, I'll go out later and check on them, but at least we do have some cuteness.

I have been nursing our one duck. She was attacked by a coon that got into her coop at night and chewed on one of her wings. That coon killed several chicks the same night and wandered into my trap a night or two later. I don't know if Ms Daisy May Quackers (DS#2 named her) will make it but she is holding her own. Her wing is black in places and smells of rotting flesh, but she is eating and bathing and seems quite comfortable. She has an outdoor hospital ward and sleeps in a tub with clean towels inside at night. I wish (there I go again) that I knew if her nibbles and pinches were affection or annoyance. I am not well versed in duck communication. She quacks, so that means she's a she, right? I read that the fellows don't quack.

Are you spraying vetricyn Gel twice a day on the wound? If so, she will probably be fine.

She will never play the piano though.....

Boy, that was hard trying to use my iPhone for posting. Screen far too small, scrolling was stupid, and I spilled my wine.

I gotta tell ya - and I hope I don't offend anyone - there was a whole lotta Caucasian dancing going on in front of the band (me too). The majority of the audience was white, between the ages of 40 and 60. But even Farmer Lew's 16 year old daughter had fun. She danced with her dad, she danced with me, and she was very impressed with the band's bass cellist.

HHandbasket and I admired all the ladies' jewelry and some of their attire. Vocally. We made sure to compliment each specific woman's necklaces and/or earrings. (Always nice to put a big smile on someone's face.)

The event caterer was from "Taste," a very good restaurant in Plymouth. I didn't get one, but I was very impressed with the "duck dog" - sausage made from duck. Made me warn the Cayuga flock when I got home: "Watch it, boys, you can be made into sausage!"

I have about six drakes too many. Most of the lady ducks have bald spots on the backs of their heads and a couple of really popular ducks have bare NECKS.
