The Old Folks Home

Folks here should spend some time reading the "New Members Intro " thread to see how very common it is for their new chicks, flocks, whatever to be wiped out in minutes.

The usual scenario is it's the owners dog (cats too) that massacred them. I have been a dog lover all my life but I still believe Dogs and chickens should NEVER meet. A chicken has never killed a dog (or cat) while dog & chicken encounters frequently end in death for the chicken. The dog has fun, the chicken does not..

I was surprised by the number of times the predator was a small or toy breed of dog, frequently a Chihuahua, Yorkie, Doxie. I wouldn't think them capable. Certainly other breeds of dog (and mutts) kill plenty and it is easier for them to muscle their way into a coop or pen with poor or no locking device. The small breeds can slip through more places, dig under, or just wait for their chance to be free when no one is watching.

X2. Too many things like chicken. I used to free range not anymore.

Thanks for thinking of me! :D

And super happy birthday to you! :hugs

Pretty darn awesome that you got some cool stuff. :ya The light-up pin sounds fun.

I took a shower this morning.... I know, I had to hurry up and put on my deodorant because I started to sweat as soon as I dried off. :lau

Gotta love this heat. Deb, must be like your heat, huh? Or I suppose that there it is so dry that the sweat disapears as soon as it starts. :idunno

Meanwhile I'm contemplating turning the heat on and I'm sitting on the couch wearing 2 jackets waiting another hour before I get to leave to go to work.

I started a fire in the woodstove yesterday. I think it may have hit 50 outside, below 40 last night, MIGHT hit 60 today. Supposed to warm up to "no woodstove temps" on Saturday. I thought it was June?????

Good to hear from AL and know that our frozen (now well thawed) human is still with the living. The way the trip was talked about before going, I would've thought the trip would be terminal. It must have been a real shock to actually feel sweat!

When will the great northern migration start I wonder? I hope our Frosted Flake gets to return before the winter freeze commences once again. As an aside, hope your dad is doing OK. Old folks who are our parents can be a handful sometimes.

Towards the end of winter, I'm ready for some warm weather, but once the red liquid in the glass starts getting above that 80-85 degree mark, I start waiting for fall to return! We're in the summer pattern now, above 90 for days in a row. And to think... I'm considering moving to TX!

What am I thinking! Actually liking the idea of starting a fire in the wood stove.

My coop is raised so the dog went under and nocked down what was blocking it from the run the it nicked down what was blocking the door and we have big dogs but it still managed to climb in and out of the coop because there were dead ones in the coop, the run, and one out side of the run.

Yup we appear to be close enough to have the same weather. Yesterday was an adventure. We had awful wind, too, so it felt colder than it was. It's nice out right now, probably about 62.

I finished 3 weeks of overnights. Now I have to get myself back to days.
