The Old Folks Home

Hi roorooyew, pleased to have you join us.

Question for all you experienced with broodies out there. My first time broody, who I have affectionately named 'Dumb Bum' at this point in time, had her fluffy butt half off her eggs when I checked on her late this morning. I nudged her to get her back on them and told her to start paying attention but not before noticing that she had some eggs with dried poo on them. One or two of her eggs were a little spotted when she went broody on them but these 4 are pretty icky. I managed to scrape off a lot of the crud on 3 of them, enough that I could candle them. Amazingly enough, I'm seeing little chicks moving around inside, even the smeared up ones.

Should I just leave well enough alone and not interfere any more than I have or try to remove some more of the crusty cruddies? She has been getting off her nest to eat and has been pooing, not every day but about every other day. I think this mishap happened early in the incubation. I try to leave hands off as much as possible but she has been a pretty demanding little girl. Hopefully her next broody siege will be easier...On both of us.

Hey @roorooyew ! Welcome to BYC and the Old Folks Home. Like has been said, no real age limit. Mostly it's an "attitude" thing. Most of us really older folks feel much like you younger folks, who being younger, feel much like us older folks.

Maybe that'll make sense on further thought... Anyway, make yourself at home and by all means share some pics if you're willing. We all love to look at pics. Guess we're pic addicts. Though we're old, most of us don't drool...

Sounds like you did what needed to be done.... If she isnt continuing to poop on the eggs... Then all good.

Just out of curiosity... Don't the brooding hens sometimes push some eggs out from under as a rotational heating thing? To let them cool down a bit? I thought they pretty much moved the eggs around every hour or so...

I read that about the egg cooling also. If Lil'girl is doing it right i'll be amazed. Bless her she is really trying. When I patted her on the back, gave her a little push and told her to back up, She looked over her shoulder as if saying. "Oh, Darn! How'd that happen?" and backed up to cover them again. I'm hoping being a broody is something that improves the more often a hen goes broody cause I gotta feeling I'm going to have to keep an eye on this hen and make sure she doesn't mess up big time. We only have about 9-10 more days to go till hatch.
