@getaclue My Mother was desperate to try to teach me when I was youngerdiva, I'm guilty of being a night owl too. Always have been, when I could. Dh works nights, so that works in my favor too.
Yes, I remember reel to reels, and the big phonographs. Ours had the automatic arm, that would activate the spindle to drop a new record onto the plate, and then lower the arm onto the record. I did have a portable phonograph for personal use, that was about the size of a small suitcase. I had to change the records on it myself, and position the arm.
