The Old Folks Home

Slow maturing? I thought that when he was almost 4 months but my pullets-Buff O/Welsummer crosses are all laying. Baby, my LO/BO cross pullet isn't laying yet. She is very slow on the maturing scale. Guess I can only hope he is following the same pattern.

Cynthia12, I agree with you. That apple tree is gorgeous!

Chickens. They like to keep us guessing.

I'd like to know how he turns out. That is pretty slow maturing. He may live longer than everyone else because he won't age as quick.

The site keeps telling me I already posted. And I'm like...I did? I've questioned myself and rechecked a few times now.

I just LOVE when chickies are resting together for night and they make those soothing calls to each other. I have 4 house chickens

in here at the moment and they're doing that.

Melts my heart. One is the tiniest OEGB, not able to manage in the cold against the bigger chicks, one got his wing twisted and caught, yuck, and two with separate issues.

Tonight is supposed to be our coldest night.
The weather network is flashing an "extreme cold warning" at the top of my page...lol.

-33C (-27.4F) temps
-43C (-45.4F) wind chill

There was a young woman in the area who had an accident last winter, she slid off the road and rolled down the embankment. No one saw...at least no one stopped, her and her 4 year old were out in the elements all night. She scaled the embankment with broken bones in the morning to flag someone down. I think of her on cold nights like this; both of what can happen and to wonder how she is doing. She suffered pretty bad frostbite keeping her daughter warm from what papers said.

Love the chickens drumming video - it's obvious they are only pecking at the little red heart in the center of each drum. So what , it works!!! Smart thinking.

The site's been doing that to me also Wickedchicken6 for the past 4 days I think.

I didn't think about that with my cockerel. He's the sweetest boy. Yesterday when one of the younger cockerels was pestering him I scooped him up and he grabbed a hold of the draw string on my hoodie and held onto it for dear life. I'd almost like to have a cockerel around that didn't go all hormonal on me.

I've just about decided that my OEGBs are going to have to have their own pen come spring. I saw one of Rosie's half brothers try to mount the little wheaten pullet and I was immediately pulling him off of her and shoving him on his way. I think I uttered something about fried chicken and inviting him for Sunday dinner along the way.

In warm weather I like to stand outside by their hardware cloth covered window and listen to them muttering to one another at sun set. Such a magical moment.

I saw that pic Cynthia. She's smart. I've never seen any of mine tuck it so well. Mine tuck but their comb's sticking out...lol.

Thanks Cynthia! Mr. Maran is one of the EE chicks from the Feb 15th hatch when I got the surprise black chicks...lol. You may remember. (I may have been just a bit excited...lol)
He's been a complete gentleman from day1 with the everyone and he's always very regal and stately. He rules with little to no fighting and he's so super scary smart...he watches everything like an OEGB. He almost freaks me out. I love his look, don't like the straight comb and big wattles due to cold hardiness but he will never leave here. Biggest rooster I have. And he's SO huggable. He gets hugged a lot.

I thought Mr. Maran "might" be from Mr Rock, but then I got the other guy sitting with him. He's from this summer. He's a full EE; Mr Red with my base hens...and I got him.

He's more skittish. Waiting to see if he's replacement worthy.

The only thing is his female offspring may be slow to mature. I've had that happen to a few of my OEGB females. Either Mr. Maran shows up and with one swipe knocks the offending rooster off...or the entire group of OEGB roosters show up and kick butt. I look forward to having the roosters separate. No oopsies, no accidental breakouts. I hope to AI hens.

Not so sure how that will go.

This is exactly what I am looking for in a rooster..and also..has to be one that won't crow all day. As you can see by my photos, I am the ...Back Yard Chicken...keeper. Have neighbors close by. Sometimes I can keep one for a while, then they always seem to think it's fun to show off their vocal cords more often. :) Little stinks. I had a beautiful Heritage RIR that sounds like your boy here. He was a sweetheart. Treated the ladies so well, came around me just fine. Not mean at all. But, like I said, they find their song. His was beautiful. It was hard placing him, but I got some babies out of him. :)

remember standard heating pads have a timer that turns them off after about two hours. The ones used for Brooding are chosen for having a switch that turns that off.

Read the first page of the site @bruceha2000 posted and it will give you the type of heating pad to use or to look for.
