The Old Folks Home

Ok, I don't know if I need an intervention or if I'm living life in a grand way... I made myself fried eggs for breakfast.... and used rendered chicken fat as the oil... fried chicken flavored eggs... yum

I cooked up a big batch of fat the other night, Zach thought I was making chicken soup... I let him think that... lol... It's safely in the freezer where he won't drink it now. Just open the bag and break off a piece when you need some for something...

Schmaltz is awesome chicken or goose fat....

Gribenes is the cracklins made from the skin during the process of rendering. I have heard they are better than bacon bits.

I am not Jewish but I love reading different recipes for foods and uses.

Hi everyone :frow
Been really really busy and sounds like you all have been too!  So sorry for you folks on the west coast, south and the rest having all the horrible weather.  Up here in what should be the frozen tozen land it's been insane!  We have had record breaking warmth for days.  The maple sappers started tapping trees last week.  That is just unheard of!!!  They are looking at possibly the best season ever.  We actually had an all night rain storm the other night, another unheard of.  I've been able to get a ton of spring chores done.  Did a complete spring cleanout on the coop this afternoon and sunburnt my face in the process    Still a few things I can't do, like get into the herb garden because the snow is too deep, still is actually winter even tho the thermometer doesn't know it right now.  Lots of mud tho everywhere we had shoveled because the ground is trying to thaw.  Speaking of snow, I'm doing all my outside work today without even a jacket but we went under a winter storm watch for Thursday/Friday.  This spring is shaping up to be a pretty crazy ride.  Supposed to be one more day of record breaking warm tomorrow and a couple of gates and some fencing that needs tending so it's off to a nice hot shower to relieve a few sore muscles and snuggle into bed to watch a good movie I've had waiting on the Genie for just such an occasion.

:th

You lower 48ers with these wild temp swings! I would start feeling bi-polar.

Me... I am smack dab in winter. I didn't have to plow yesterday...but I will need to plow today.

Thank you for the lovely photos. I do enjoy them. The buds are beautiful (and probably at least a month out, here) and I have a special soft spot for bulbs.

I agree that BYCers are some of the best. I met my best friend on here. On a whim I flew out to Utah to go hiking with her. I figured if she killed me I've had a good life, and if she didn't kill me, I could have some fun. Well I am glad I took the risk. On a whim we both flew out to Alabama and met another good friend for the first time in person two years ago. For those of you I haven't met, I can't imagine life without you. So many of you have shared your stories, and given countless hours of support for those of us struggling. :hugs

Right back at you!

x400 thousand

Ditto!

My RL friends have all moved away..... so you are all I've got.

Hi everyone. I did something today that really makes me feel good. I gave our neighbor 5 of my roosters. Not only did she help me out but I think I helped them out. They are a large family of 10 kids, two adults and just bought 50 hens. No roosters. I think the hens are production reds that a egg operation were selling off to bring their census down. I suspect they are older hens and still have some laying ability but no roosters to keep the safe as they free range. Also no source of fertile eggs to replenish their flock. If my boys get to work and get busy I'm sure she will be having a surplus of eggs that she can put in her incubator and I was able to reduce my rooster over population. It feels like a good day.

It is SPRING.

For those of you puzzling over this, here in the Great White North when the ground begins to thaw, the roads are under-supported and will break/warp under heavy loads. Once the thaw begins some mystical creature goes around and marks all the back roads as "Heavy Loads Limited" on these fabulous hunter orange signs to notify everyone that the weight limit is restricted on the roads.

Well, y'all... they went up today!

I almost peed my pants in the car when I saw one.

This is what I wait for every spring.

Other signs of spring: my neighbor out in a t-shirt shoveling the remaining snow off her deck while a young kid clad in only a diaper plays on the giant snow pile. The snow turning into mud and ice. The days are getting longer - one can actually experience daylight at some point either before or after the work day, now.

Win Win... sounds like a good day!

We had robins in the yard this morning and the red winged black birds were in the tree tops...I'm trying not to get ahead of Mother Nature but I'm hopeful!!

I saw a robin yesterday. I heard him the day before. Yesterday he was back, singing his brains out. I finally got a glimpse of him in a tree. It was 74 here today. Windy but beautiful. I was looking at the advanced forecast and it's calling for the typical three days of spring like weather followed by 3 days of a swing back to cold and blustery that we get in late winter early spring. Then it dawns on me that we are almost into March.

My bantam eggs are on day 15 today. I started them on the evening of the 7th and counted the 8th as day one. When should I start lockdown? Friday night or Saturday morning? I thought given that they are bantam eggs maybe I should start on Friday night but I'm not sure and not finding any references other than day 18.
