The Old Folks Home

Looks perfect!

It is still flooding here in Northern Ca. We had another atmospheric river come through yesterday. The Sacramento River is at mild flood stages and places near the river are flooded. It has been worse before though.

Dams are now high enough that they need to open spillways. One levy broke yesterday and flooded a town. The break in the levy has been patched for now. Hopefully this will be the last of the big storms. If we can get a week of dry weather all will be good.

Woodland is fine but they have told us to keep a bag packed.

I've been following the news feeds about the atmospheric river that is occuring over the west coast. We are running dry here, and have been all winter.

Send some of the rain our way and be safe!

Yesterday I baked sourdough bread. It is from a king arthur flour recipe. It was one of the best yet! I used the clay domed baker that I got as a Christmas present this year.

I used Oregon Sourdough. You can get it for free from the friends of Carl website. You send them a stamped self addressed envelope and they mail you the starter as a dry powder. They also send recipes and instructions. I also give out starts. I mailed one to a BYC member a couple of weeks ago and it is bubbling away at her house now.

Send me a pm with your address and I will mail you a start.

Do you send dry powder?

Hope you stay safe. You guys have really run the gamut of options from extreme drought to flooding in the past few years. Hope it settles down for you, soon.

We are supposed to hit 50 on Friday. We hit 44 the other day and lot of melting happened. My snowbanks are probably only 4 to 5 feet high against the house, now... instead of 8.

Yes, I dehydrate the sourdough and send 10G of the powdered flakes. It is a very good long term storage of sourdough. It does take several days to get it going but is full strength after that. Starting a batch yourself takes a year to get to full strength.

Yes! Sacramento has broken a 100 year record for rainfall for January and February. The all time record is 37inches for the rainy season and we are at 27 now with lots of rain to come still.

The sad thing is that too much of the water goes out to the Ocean. We need a way to capture it to recharge the aquifer system. Central california has sunk so much that the California Aqueduct is in danger of failing.

I hope you get some rain soon!

I may have to do that, just to get DW going :-D

Got a package of live plants awhile ago, "where did these come from!?"
Says on the package Oklahoma...
"From who!"
A cool BYC member, I mentioned I planted multiplier potato onions and always wanted Egyptian walking onions, she said I'll send you some, she sent live plants! Seed companies only sell the top set bulbs.
"Why would you give a stranger online our address!? A 'she'! How much did you pay, they were sent priority mail!?"
I offered to pay, she said no, I looked them up, been posting on the Oklahoma thread for yrs, pretty sure she's a real person and not out to kill us....

Then I got a BYC calendar in the mail, "where did this come from!?"
BYC.. A awesomely cool BYC member thought I needed one :-) I didn't have to pay for it.

I have to pick up a laying CX pullet from another BYC member about 20min from us this weekend, for a breeding project crossing NN. Hopefully she gives some fertile eggs for the Easter HAL.
"How much you paying for it!?"
Nothing, I offered she said no. Though I figure I'll give her some pure Naked Neck chicks when they hatch. She has quite the business going, has various breeds and sells eggs, raises and processes CX and heritage meat birds yr round for sale, has all the licences and insurance needed.

BYC members are the coolest! :-D

x3 on BYCers being the coolest!

@superchemicalgirl You requested some pictures of "spring" to ease your winter blues. We have had some absolutely beautiful weather for the past week. Here are some pics I took today.

Heartnut tree starting to bud:

Shagbark hickory youngster starting to bud:

Dogwood bush stems starting to green-up behind my handsome Audun:

Daffodils starting to pop through:

My LGC (livestock guardian cat) keeping an eye out while some of the flock enjoys the sunshine and 60F temps:

The grass hasn't decided to turn green....yet.....and we are forecast to have a high of 31F on Saturday and 36F on Sunday but I'm hopeful the worst is over for us.

I hope Maine and Cali get a break in their weather soon.
