The Old Folks Home

He has spots. Big ones little ones. I keep threatening to play connect the dots but he just licks my face and shoots out the dog door.

Lol! :lau

Harley is a nice looking dog.  Maybe it's just the light playing on him but, looks like he has some brindle coloring among the black

Yup, dark brindle.
There was what they called a reverse brindle pup also, never heard of it, pics they had online didn't give it justice...wow..looked like tiger stripe, super cool.

re: adopted dogs and fees

IMHO and experience there are two reasons valid for high adoption fees. (1) It helps to cover the vet visit, spay/neuter, vaccinations, worming and dental that the dog undergoes at a reputable agency before adoption and (2) paying it gives credence to the fact that you're serious about the dog and not just going to use it for fighting bait or target practice.

We're in the process of adopting another greyhound and have an application in, but there will be a delay due to a medical condition that needs to clear up (the tick ick Erlichia.) The adoption agency we use charges the same amount no matter how onerous each individual dog's vet bills are or how long they're boarded out with foster families or kennel boarding. With greyhounds there are a lot of fractured legs when dogs are rescued from the track and, apparently, tick-borne diseases in TX. The bills can run into the thousands. They rely heavily on volunteers and donations.

We've got 7 y.o. Norman, the wall-dozing champion. Given a vertical surface (or part of one) he'll be upside propped up against it. We got him as an older return rescue after his first owner passed away.

The one we have an application in for is also a return rescue and, actually, twice rescued. She was part of an abuse surrender confiscation as a puppy and then came back into the system when her current owner couldn't take care of her properly due to health problems. We LOVE used dogs, especially ones that are housebroken. Puppies are cute and oodles of fun, but being the Official Pee Monitor is not.

I am a cat person myself I totally agree with the adoption fees at a no kill shelter but most animal shelters are run poorly I used to work for the county and have seen it up close friends get animals free and if you are looking for a pet with collar and tags they have been removed and if you don't act within 24 hours the animals are euthanized if your lucky and catch them before they are put down they charge a boarding fee of 100 dollars + re adoption fees that was back in the 90s but when I complained about it to the commissioners they said it's the only way to fund the shelter well then there were rooters that animals were being taken form the yards of the owners during the day finally one was caught almost shot! Was a big stink after that I was back out on the road and never heard what had happened after that someone said they arrested the owner for pulling a gun on the so called officer but my cats were adopted from Dothan alabama I had adopted a cat years ago and he was the baby of ours so when I had some spare change I would go by and give 50 - 100 dollars or once the public had a sale of catfood half price and bogo so I went to all 4 bought all they had went to the shelter and ask them if they wanted it they were happy to accept and that went on for years every month or so some kind of little bit of change went there well I came in one day not thinking of anything checking up on the cats and dogs giving each and every one a minute of people time I came across some kittens born at the shelter with no eyelids they were asking for donations to get the needed surgery for the kittens so they might have a chance to be adopted and not go blind well I stuck my foot into my mouth and ask how much do you still need the girl said we need just 95 more and if we can get that by wednesday they can get it done if not then it will cost more because the vet that does the surgery will be out of town and it will cost too much to take them to Birmingham and then pick them back up a few days later well I had my toy money ( rc planes) I couldn't help it out came the 95 dollars and she called the vet before I left to scedual the appointment for the 3 kittens. Well about 6 months later all but one was adopted and only one was left I had come in a few times to check in on the animals my scooter had passed away after 13 years so I would have some cash in my pocket I could hear scooter wanting out and knew he was pushing the buttons for me to take that cash into the shelter so I did. I always ask if they had any that wasn't being adopted I would take more time to get them a little more used to strangers well this beautiful cat ran up under me and wouldn't let me be and the girl told me ( new girl) that he had been there since birth but was shy to everyone and wasn't getting adopted I felt so sorry for him not knowing he was the same one that I had paid for the surgery. I wasn't looking for a cat but here we go I went up front set down and the girl that knew me ask me if everything was ok I said I'm thinking about adopting one of your problem cats she said we don't have any problem cats looked through her files and said you must be talking about TK! I said yes she looked at me with a smile and said well he has your initials for a reason ! Made me courious then so I ask why she lied at me and said you paid for his surgery! Well to make a long story short he got neutered for free and no adoption fees charged! He has been one of my sweetest cats I have so huge and lovable. Oh by the way I did donate an extra 50 that day! First time I had adopted a young cat. And didn't know I was paying for his boarding and med bills the whole time lol

sweet sweet pictures. My Chase was straight off the track at three... He was treated well thank goodness his blown hock was healed but he was somewhat off when he trotted about. His main issue was a Crypt Orchid... and the rescue I got him from left it up to the new owner to take care of spaying and neutering. And of course they have issues with barbituates so I had to research a vet that knew not to use them. Nutering cost about the same as a spay plus extra for the meds.

Yep his favorite sleeping position was ON the couch upside down head hanging down tongue out til it would dry. Goof Ball. Took him about three weeks to know this was his new home... One night I heard him get up out of his bed and leave the bedroom. "Heh Heh Heh -" was his signature pant. Then he would come back in and scratch around in his bed. Then he would get up and disappear.... "Heh Heh Heh" off he would go then come back and scratch around in his bed... I layed there and watched to see what he was doing.... I finally realized he was getting my dirty clothes to lay in his bed... "Awww... HOme." soon as he had what he thouight was enough he layed down for the night.

I tried to teach him to use a doggy door... Sigh. he would come in... but never figured out how to go out. So from then on the back door was left open for him.

My new place would be awesome for a greyhound... and If I can ever afford to do about three acres of good fence I will have at least two. Id set up a running course for them. because even though he loved his soft furniture he would get up and go if there was space for it. Wabbits would be on notice for sure.

what a sweet story... Here there is only one kill shelter... All the rest are no kill. At least as many as they can. Some dogs and cats are un-adoptable....

There is also Friends of Cats and the Feral Cat society.... the latter has a network of vets that volunteer their service so If you take in a feral cat you can get vouchers to have them spayed and neutered. Twenty bucks for males thirty five for females.

I was gone most of the day, doctor's appointments (always fun.....not) and the like. First thing I did when I got home was check on my broody. Naturally, the poor girl had fouled herself. I guess no hen can be perfect. I knew I had to do something so I got a coffee can of warm water, and decided that finished hatching or not, that mess had to go. I was worried that maybe she had pooed on one of the babies. I moved a couple of babies to the nursery pen, grabbed her, praying that there weren't any unhatched eggs under her. Nope. 8 of 8 all healthy and happy, the darkest one looking, no surprise, like a Welsummer chick. Probably the single bantam egg from my girls and the product of her partying with Doc, my Welsummer rooster. The lightest one a dusty yellow with two light brown marks on it's head. Momma got her back side scrubbed at and put with her babies. I left her happily teaching 3 of them how to eat feed out of a mayonnaise lid.

A 100% hatch from a first time mom. I'll forgive the poop bomb with that percentage rate
That's a wonderful hatch! Congrats!

My pickup truck is a 4 speed with granny, so you only use 3 gears. Actually, we only really use 2 of them, the synchronizer is wearing out, so it won't stay in 3rd if you let off the gas, so we pretty much start in 2nd, shift to 3rd, leave it there about 10 seconds to build a little more speed, and then into 4th.

Now, that truck is a beast... it's only a F-150, but it's an '85 step side painted flat black, looks awesome driving through over a foot of snow...

I kind of agree, but then again, if the dog is going to be put to sleep and they are going to be out all of that money for feed and meds, plus the euth drugs, wouldn't it make sense to let it walk out the door for $10 rather than hold out for $50-$100 or more and end up killing it? If the fees were lower, the animals might not stay there as long, thus less costs that they have to deal with.

I'm not cheap when it comes to my animals, we brought in 3 females (1 pregnant), and 1 male kitten (son of one of the females) that were strays, the pregnant one had 3 kittens. Once all kittens were old enough and weaned, we took all 7 cats to a local shelter that does discount vet care and got them all fixed, wormed, on a flea pill, and vaccinated. Once they all healed up, the 2 mother cats were released as they were not house cats (one was violent, couldn't go in the basement without her hissing and growling at you, the other one decided to get in the exposed joists and pee in the floor from up there instead of getting down and using the litter box) but we still have the one adult female and all 4 kittens who we keep vetted and on flea pills.

That said, my brother and his family went to a local shelter and got 2 puppies and ended up spending over $1,000 on the puppies... I wouldn't pay that much for a mixed breed mutt, if I was going to pay that much, I would go to a breeder and get one with papers.
