The Old Folks Home

if you have the wood why not use it, I use the 5 dollar storage tubs with the
front cut out may I ask the dimension of your boxes
12x12x12 inch. I looked at the ones online and almost all were 1 ft cubed so I went the same size put two up and one is being used already! I'm thinking about making some smaller for the bantam coop that I'm getting ready to build. I figure out of a sheet of plywood I can get 32 squares out of it it takes each one 3 so that's 10 per sheet I paid 8.75 for the plywood it's about 1/4 inch not thick but enough and the hardwood is a 1x4 cut up at a cost of 2.46 per 8 ft low begat piece is 11.5 inches cut back for sides total 7 pieces at 1x1x 12inch that will give me about 5 per board so I need two then the glue and staples about 15 cents each =1.50 @ 10 sobit comes up to about 15.50 for 10 ok a dollar and a half but a savings of 8.50 each and no shipping so it knocks a bit off of overall cost!!

Looks good to me @lilwildrabbit My nesting boxes are all made out of repurposed wood that we have found around the farm..

Can somebody with more experience than I have answer a question for me? Can I safely combine 11-5 week old juveniles with a broody hen and her 8 2 week olds in a coop that is 4X8 and has plenty of roost and floor space without major blood shed on anybody's part? Broody mom is a little velociraptor when it comes to her chicks and the 5 week olds are little overly friendly spoiled brats.

They are barely close enough to combine. The Broody will keep her chicks away from the older ones until she decides to let them go. When that happens you will want to get the broody away from the chicks.

Thanks @Ronott1. I was hoping for a 'do it' vote. The little poop machines are making the hobby room ,where they have been living, smell more like chickens and less like hobbies, LOL.

I know that FB used to have my old computer so bogged down I could not do anything either. So I had some kind of blocker on it, can't recall which one.
I guess if this free one quits working I will look for another one. I pay enough for Antivirus and web scanners. My kids have all stopped using their computer they only use their phones and pay as much for them as I did for my computer. LOL So I guess that is where I am headed.

My DIL gave me a very nice Moto X 2nd generation phone when she bought her new one.
Now she wishes she had not cuz hers has all kinds of issues that drive her crazy.
The only thing that mine did was turn it's self on and start talking to me.

My DH and I just went to smart phones. He doesn't use his much. I use mine to check up on things..here and fb, but prefer to get on my pc to write. I do now message family and a few folks that ask about chickens I have for sale. Or for eggs. So, yes, it's handy for sure.
I also have a two games on it, and one is interesting to do...a puzzle app! Love it.

the only google i use is Maps and I use fire fox with Ad Blocker. I do not have to up date anything with google.

I do NOT use Chrome and I do not update it when some other app Slipps it in. Which happens sometimes when I update Flash player. I forget to uncheck a box.

Oh and for what its worth.... I use ONLY desk top versions of everythihng. Which may be a difference I dont know.

deb
I use firefox on my pc, and chrome on my phone. Works. :)

Cool looks good.

I use dish pans from the dollar tree.

Hahaha it's probably the filters.

Ha..I just bought a metal tub to put out for my silkies. I know they won't end up going up the ramp to go lay in there, so, I will put this tub outside on it's side, with some shavings in it. Hope they use it!

As always, it is best to move them at night and watch them closely for the first day.

I'm probably going to wait a couple of night more before I make the big move. Temps are down in the upper 30s for the next couple of nights and they are just now off the heat lamp. I moved Momma Dolly and her 8 little ones out of the nursery pen and into the grow out coop out of necessity. This morning when I opened the nursery pen one chick got so excited it came hurtling out of the box which is about 4.5 feet up and above my laying boxes and down to the main coop floor right in front of another Welsummer hen. Their reaction was priceless. Hen looked at 10 day old chick like "where did THAT come from?" and baby looked up at hen like "Are you my momma?" They both froze staring at one another and I grabbed baby. I told my husband that the first time one came hurtling out of the pen I'd move them so today was the day.

I have to admit that I'm going to miss the little poop machines when I move them out of our hobby room.I won't miss the smell or the scattered pine chips.....but I will miss them.

Is this what they mean when they say 'empty nest syndrome?'

I can't delay it any longer. Gotta go gather eggs and do PM feeding. It's been raining for the past 4 days. Mud everywhere. Standing water everywhere. We go months without much rain at all and now somebody turned on the faucet and broke off the handle. Yeah, just can't please some people.
