Diva, the reason for the Epsom salt is that it contains magnesium. There are other elements besides the N-P-K of typical fertilizers that plants need to grow, and magnesium is one of them. A little bit goes a long way with magnesium, though; I've see wonderful things happen when plants were magnesium deficient, but it's easy to overdo it. We get so much rain around here, the soils are pretty much deficient in everything, potting soil might not be, and probably wouldn't get flooded and washed out to the same degree.

What is the purpose of the Epson salts? My house plant mentor told me to use on my houseplants(I mixed the amounts she said) and my plants hated it and reacted badly. I think she forgets she uses RO water and I have Chicago water with fluoride and probably a million other things in it.

This is what Google said:
Chemically, Epsom salts is hydrated magnesium sulfate (about 10 percent magnesium and 13 percent sulfur). Magnesium is critical for seed germination and the production of chlorophyll, fruit, and nuts. Magnesium helps strengthen cell walls and improves plants' uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur.
Here is a list of minerals that plants need and how to tell what they need.


Last year I also mixed some of my chickens oyster shell in the potting mix. But I forgot it this year. lol Now I will have to feed them tums.

Diva I only put a small handful in my mix. And later on if they need more I can add it.
