The Old Folks Home

Hey Lady, just wanted to take a minute to tell you....Mom spent the night with us Monday...Tuesday morning, we had our coffee with blueberry waffles, smothered lightly with peanut butter with a drizzle of your hickory smoked syrup.

She's lost a lot of weight on the WW diet over the past year..
Me thinks she may be paying a few extra $$$$ come next Monday morning at weigh in if she doesn't get her walking done and calorie/portion count adjusted asap! heehee

She loved the syrup! Chirp
I am so happy your mom like my Hickory syrup! we had some on some chicken last night and it was soooo good!

Hopefully she will get her nerves calmed down and her diet back under control.

I don't know why you think of my Hickory syrup as smokey though? I don't! I know while it is cooking it keeps me hungry all day!

I had one more chick start to pip last night before I went to bed. I thought it would be done hatching this morning. But no!
I found it had not gone any further in it's hatch. So I started chipping away at the shell for it. I saw a little vein on one spot so I quit and put it back in the bator. But I think it is upside down! One wing is out but I cannot see it's head. Now what?

I'd leave it for now. Put a damp wash cloth, sponge, maxi pad, etc in there to raise the humidity. Keep an eye on it. In another few hours, if it hasn't progressed, go back in for it.

Before you go back in, turn the shower on in your bathroom and close the door, leave the fan off if possible. Get it steamy in there. Bring the chick on the half shell in with you, and slowly peel the egg shell off, leaving the membrane, if possible. Look for blood. There will be some blood, but large veins should make you stop, and put the chick back in the incubator.

When they hatch I always use white sugar in their water for extra calories. Put a tablespoon in with a quart of water. Gradually reduce the amount down over the next 3-4 days. It does increase the pasty butt, but I think it's worth it.

Good luck.

Ok, Thanks. I will try it... Scared but I will try!

Sometimes they come out a bit wonky. They're really stuck in there, good. The only thing I'd be worried about is the chick stuck in the shell from lack of humidity. It happens at the end of some of my hatches, and the chick can't zip because they're stuck to the membrane. I wait for them to pip, wait a few hours to make sure they're not zipping on their own, and then start the process. They'll be fine as long as they've absorbed most of the blood. They'll be weak for a few days, hence the sugar water.

Nice pictures, Oz. I love the black rooster with the gold hackle.

Ok. Thanks so much! I am nervous about trying, but we'll so how it goes! I hope great!

I got the baby out of the shell for the most part. It still has a good bit of yolk in the sack it has to absorb. And the sack is still attached to part of the shell. So I put all of it on a rag back in the bator to finish up the yolk! YUCK!!!! I did not want to do this part and yet here I am on my first hatch!

Wisher! I have a picture of one the chicks I hatched from the eggs you sent me:

She lays a brown egg.

There is another that is laying a small green egg but I do not have a picture of that pullet.
SHE IS BEAUTIFUL!
The Pekin is a domestic breed created from the Mallard, so they are the same species. Absolutely, they can mate and produce fertile offspring.
AWESOME!!! I have had to take Ying away from Laffy because she was taking the brunt of his loving and was naked from the neck all the way down her back. I have thought about getting a few mallard hens to throw in with him and see what kind of babies come out.
I want to send my compliments to both Wolftracks and Airelle.. I just read your recent posts on the New Crazy 24 Hour Auction and the way that both of you ladies responded to some of the comments regarding the "Americanas" auction was top notch. You both shutdown the snickerers and nasty posts and eased the auction poster without insulting anyone. Fine examples of how to act properly...class acts.....WAY TO GO! You are two of the reasons the Old Folks Home forum is a friendly community of individuals.

Now I'm worried about yolk sac infection or something like that!

Put the chick into a tea cup and back into the incubator for a day. Give it Poly visol baby vitamins without iron, a drop twice a day.

The yolk needs to absorb as much as possible and it is best if what is left falls off by itself. Use Vetricyn gel for any wound left and do not pull anything.

Your are doing a great job!
