The Old Folks Home

Hey AL!!!! How about sendin' some of that ice this way??? It's 7 a.m. and 70o! :th This is just insane. How do you folks in the south survive this? My poor Aussie hen was suffering so bad at bedtime last night I had to run a fan in the coop for the first time ever. The watches and warnings are up but the storms won't hit us until round noon. In the meantime the air is so heavy it's like trying to breathe with your head in a water bucket. Don't think there will be much work being done today.
Wow, it's usually like that here in TN but lately we've had to fire up the wood stove for a few hours after the sun goes down. It been down right chillie. I can't wait for warm summer nights!

Be careful what you wish for, LOL.

It was the same way here until about a week ago. We were lighting a fire in the mornings because we were running around bundled up in afghans and sofa throws when we got up. It's May/June for goodness sakes.

Now it's in the 90s for the next few days. Our new neighbors are from N. Dakota and were telling us how nice the weather is here compared with what they were used to in ND. We told them to remember what they were saying because the weather can really rear up and bite you on the backside here. Like the old saying goes, if you don't like the weather, stick around for 12 hours because it will change--- and not necessarily for the better.

How's the daughter in ICU?

Dsqard and I are back from adventures in california.

Just a couple photos.

We didn't run into any bears, but we did run into two hikers coming back off the trail who had a bear encounter, and the bear stole their bear canister (required bear proof food storage container).

It was beautiful, and hot most of the time. I have a pretty significant sunburn (we really don't see sun like that up here) despite copious amounts of SPF 50 applied multiple times per day.

The campsite we stayed at was nice, it had a double decker composting toilet facility (I know y'all were just discussing composting toilets) so my fear of pooping in the woods was unnecessary. The bad news is when you get up at 3 am and have to urgently pee and have little sense of direction the facilities are impossible to find, even with 2 flashlights. I had to wake Dsqard to take me potty.

We hiked about 50 miles and so many feet up and back down. I screwed up my knee pretty bad on the second to last day, probably need to get it checked out asap.
Great trip and pictures!

You get more solar radiation when you go up in elevation which makes sun burns much worse. Sierras are all very high up for sure! When I go up there, it is hard to exercise because of the lower O2 levels.

Scg you pics are amazingly beautiful! Sounds like you both had a great time.
:love

Ron sounds like your place is feeling like a new home. :D

I've been at my dd#3's house in FL. For a week. Going home tomorrow.
Dd #1 did not have to go on dialysis. She's still in the hospital still Baker acted till the doctor feels she's recovered from the trauma she's been through. Her wrist and hand was sprained but not broken. She has PTSD.
It's rained most of the time I've been here. dd and dil took me out for Mexican food and a drink for my birthday strawberry daiquiri. Yum!
Going home tomorrow.

Scg I've seen people use a bucket with the bottom cut out and use a pool noodle around the rim to sit on.

We're hot here...not super hot but I wish we were back to being cool here as well. :th Give me cold any day and I'll take it!
Oh, and lastly, we didn't get a lot of signal, unless we climbed to the top of the rim (which we did frequently) or went into "town" 30 minutes down the road (which we did once).
The one time we went into town I received this text from BF:
"Fun Fact: the top of the cat litter box works excellent as a shield"

(We have the covered cat litter boxes in the coop as extra nesting boxes)

Apparently the turkey was not well behaved for him, either.
Now that just made me laugh out loud! gig.gif I have an enclosed kitty litter box too!

The boy and his friends went fishing last week and experienced the same thing with sun burning despite covering themselves in sunscreen quite frequently. That's from the reflection of the sun's rays off the water? The boy wasn't bad...his friend got deep fried.
I took those with my cell phone. Dsqard is the photographer, she's working on the pics taken with a real camera.
Well, those are some pretty nice pics with a phone! :clap

I'm really happy to hear things aren't broken and that she didn't require dialysis.:hugs
I like the pool noodle idea.:clap Sounds very soft.:love

Our outhouse had 2 holes; one bigger, one smaller...lol. It's still sitting behind the buildings in the back after all these years. We got a bathroom when I was in grade 4.

My own family did all our own renos and motor replacements and such...lol. I think that ship has sailed though...:lau This house needs serious renovations. I'd just like to get finished our house in the first place. We put in 2nd hand kitchen cupboards when we built. Still dreaming of the day when we get new ones. My idea/color pallet has changed so drastically for our house...maybe it's a good thing we didn't get done.

Eventually we hope to get both houses fixed up and done. Magic of it is we can move to the other house while one is getting worked on. The bad part is there are two houses to clean all the time. :( Failing miserably there...:lau In case you're wondering, the second...much older house came with the home quarter. We don't really want two houses. All the water branches off to the rest of the farm and drinkers etc from the old house so that house has to stay. The boy might live here initially...right now it's the "office" and has the internet etc. Our house doesn't have internet.

We were too wet...then it got dry in places so we needed rain. Just got 1 2/10 inches with double that one the way. Tired of being flooded out.

Was gone yesterday to visit Gran. Get home at 12pm and there's a dead female guinea in the coop. Not sure what happened. Still have to look at her.

The broody hen has went extreme broody. She's still got the keet and she's decided to set on a small nest of oegb eggs on the floor I hadn't gotten to yet. crazy.gif Have to deal with that as well today. laughing.gif
