The Old Folks Home

we had an above ground pool in Vegas...... Back in 65... The pool filter was a simple arrangement... Fill a bag with DE Tie it on the out let and run the pump....

By the end of summer we had grass growing up through the bottom.... :th Good ole Bermuda

In winter it would freeze over with about half an inch of ice.... My dog Foxy had been tortured all summer by me throwing him in the pool.... So I scooped him up and threw him in the pool.... When i plucked him out there was nice doggie foot prints melted in the ice... I was a baaad kid.

While this is not about chickens, I've shared things about Dh from time to time, some of them quite funny, so I thought I would share this. I've had pools all my life, until ex, and I opened our own store, where we drilled wells, did pump repairs, sold pool supplies, and had a pool cleaning service. I usually ran the store during the day, and cleaned pools after we closed the store. Dh has never owned a pool in his life until now.

Several days ago, the pool was low on chlorine. I checked the salt level in the pool, added a little salt, and turned up the chlorine generator, to produce more chlorine. The next morning the pool was green. I flipped the switch to Superchlorinate, to shock the pool, and tested everything else. I knew he was going to have a cow, unfortunately not the Guernsey I'd like to have, so I took a sample to our local Pinch A Penny. They confirmed that everything was fine, except I was low on chlorine, and printed it out. When Dh was fussing, I asked him to check the cell, that produces the chlorine, to make sure it was clean. I know how to do it, but am not strong enough to turn it, to disconnect it. A little later he told me he checked it, and it was fine. Ok, shocking it will clear it up, so I waited.

Later that night, the pool was still green. Again, I asked him if he was sure he checked the cell. Again, he assured me he had, and it was clean. The next day, the pool remained green, even though I had turned everything up, so it would produce a lot of chlorine. By that evening, Dh was really fussing at me. I asked him to please double check, and make sure the cell was not dirty. A bit later, he told me he checked the cell, and it was fine. I told him that it was apparent we needed a new cell, and we could afford it next pay day, but in the meantime, the pool had to have chlorine. He asked what I would need, and I gave him a little list, so he heads off to Home Depot, and spends $80.00 on supplies.

When he returned, I threw a few 3 inch tablets in the skimmer basket. It only ran 3 hours, before it was time for the pool to shut off, it's on a timer, but I saw that it was already looking a little better. I assured Dh, that the pool would be clear by the end of the next day. By mid afternoon the next day, the pool was looking pretty good. I asked Dh to wash out the filter. He did. When he got through, he took out the cell on the chlorine generator. Lo, and behold there was an ant's nest, and a lot of other debris in it. I knew right then he had lied all those times about checking it. I was not happy.

I told him to get my 2 mop buckets, and the measuring cup I use for pool chemicals. The cup holds about 2 - 3 cups of liquid. I told him to fill the measuring cup with muriatic acid, put the cell in 1 bucket, then pour the muriatic acid in the cell, then put the cell in the 2nd. bucket, and pour the muriatic acid in the first bucket, back into the cell. I was doing other things, but saw him pour the muriatic acid back, and forth from the buckets into the cell, several times. He was fascinated that the ants would fizz, and dissolve. Finally, the cell was clean, so he put it back on the chlorine generator, and reset it. It starts cranking out chlorine. He poured the muriatic acid from the bucket into the pool.

He then went swimming, and began complaining that the water was burning his skin a little. He got out, and went to take a bath, while I tested the pool. I could not believe how acidic the water was. I went to look at the gallon jug of muriatic acid, and found the empty jug in the trash. He poured a whole gallon of muriatic acid in the pool. Yeah, I guess it WAS burning his skin.

Later that night, somewhere had a sale on the cartridge for our filter, and it was only $90.00. I let him know that had he not lied about checking the cell, we could have afforded the new cartridge, but because he lied, he would have to wait, and probably pay full price. Lying doesn't pay well.
He decided he'd take an online homeowner's pool care course. He was bragging how he passed. Yup, he knows everything now, right? What my new pool expert can't figure out is, I won't put any stabilizer in the pool. The Pinch A Penny expert salesman, and some expert online sources say we have to have it, otherwise our pool will never look good, or be clean. What they can't figure out is, how I'm keeping the pool looking great, and clean without it. Of course, I can't really be that smart, right?

The next morning, the pool has never looked better! No sign of algae, no cloudiness, the water is sparkling. My expert decided that there must have been just enough stabilizer in those few chlorine tablets to bind the particulates, creating a larger mass, so the filter could remove them. Um, that's what a coagulant does, not stabilizer, and there was not enough stabilizer from those few tablets to have any effect on that amount of water. He could not figure it out, and I wouldn't tell him, but I'll tell you. Remember how he was amazed that the muriatic acid dissolved the ants? Well, he poured so much muriatic acid in the pool, that it totally dissolved all the particulates. ROFLOL!

Yep, I made it home. Thanks for asking.

Nothin dead. Sitter did a good job.

I wanted to give her as few pens to take care of as possible, so I tossed some grow outs in with the bantams, and left the three bantam roosters in their own place....I was hoping to return to bantam hens with pretty feathers...but a few of the grow outs are too big already, and male, so continued the feather pulling on the heads of the girls. Dang. Not too bad actually, but disappointing.

All of the standards at I tossed together did worse actually... I can see a bit of a bare back on at least three or more ladies. :( A couple of my pretty Spitz girls that had been perfectly well treated by their Spitz roos are ruffled and bare backed now..,.

I am thinking that I will sell all of my Ameraucana.... (just the standard blacks, not my bantams). That will help the girls, and those roos are not as good as the other breeds.

I hate it when my girls get ugly.

I'm glad you're home safe & they're all still alive (even if a little worse for wear.) :thumbsup

I hear ya Al. I pulled all of my standard roosters that I have left from the flock and put the bantam boys with the hens. I wasn't expecting much trouble as the cockerels are under 5 months old. My Welly girls are tough little hussies and I have to admit that it's funny as all get out watching them beat up the young cockerels when they make advances towards them and now some of the Buff Girls are following suit. And the momma with 4 babies that are following her around even though they are almost 6 weeks old? Don't even consider approaching that one.

There are a few BO hens though that I've noticed that while their backs aren't looking as threadbare, they could all be called Kojack due to their bald heads.

Gotta give those mini roos credit. They are determined.

Okay made it home 7 pullets sold at auction so I have room for 8 lavender ameracauna

Man I spoke too soon. It's been two weeks since I lost a bird to Mareks. I was just out in the coop, pulling late hatching eggs that I had marked from under my broody who is hatching chicks today and noticed that one of my Welsummer hens was standing by me all fluffled up, eyes closed. I immediately got a sad and gloomy feeling. Took the eggs in the house, candled and got them situated into the incubator to finish up......not my plans, hens donated a few eggs to broodies when my back was turned and I've been passing them down from broody to broody. Speckles is my last broody and they have anywhere from three days to a week to go. I'm hoping to stuff the one due in a few days back under momma when the time comes. I went back out and checked her. She was hiding under the nesting boxes when I went out which seems to be the chicken grave yard not to be confused with the elephant grave yard where all elephants go to die. When I checked her over she was very thin, no breast muscle at all. No signs of egg binding, infact, her pelvis was empty and soft as was her crop. She kept closing her eyes.

I put her down, cursing Marek's disease with every breath.

Meanwhile, Speckles has two new babies under her and the third pipping/zipping. Two chicks born and the flock will carry on.

God, please let somebody find a cure for this horrible disease.

Penny 1960 those Lavender Ameracaunas are beautiful. Don't blame you for making room for them.

Happy belated Canada Day to my Canadian friends and an early Happy 4th of July to us Americans!

Today is Canada Day. You are right on time! ;)
Thank you for the wishes! :hugs It's pretty much just a day where we can't get parts if something breaks down. Everything's closed. laughing.gif

That is unbelievable about someone messing around your coop, Chicka.
I like the idea of paintballing or frying them. sinister-smiley-for-facebook#5050505075.png
So glad to hear you haven't had any losses Micro!:yesss:

SGC...that totally sucks about your trip trophy. :barnie

Penny, those are gorgeous birds!:love

Well, we survived Graduation on Monday. The boy wasn't graduating, but he was an usher, an escort and an mc for the grad supper. So we went to see him in the grad and we had to work because it's his grad next year.
Monday was a busy day. The boy got his license.:yesss: That makes things a whole lot easier. He'd been asked by some of the girls to bring his car in so they could have pictures with it in their dresses. So it was a tandem effort to get both vehicles in for the day. (his car and the newer car for taking driver training)

We're just starting haying. The chicks and keets I hatched are doing well and I'm really loving the colors that some of the chicks are turning out to be. They were supposed to be Ameraucanas...but the chicks didn't turn out true. They're from good looking stock and blue eggs to cross with my EEs so it's good. I actually like the way they're turning out better! I love black and white! :yesss: They're nice, calm hardy chicks...not picky at all. I just put the youngest guineas out and no one even noticed the small birds. I think I'm putting out the wee OEGBs today...and I don't anticipate any issues. I really like the laid back birds.:love
