The Old Folks Home

My dog Annie was sitting in the living room one time.... parakeet was walking around on the edge of the drapes... Muttering to himself. Suddenly he flew down and swouped right past Annie. Snap she went and all we could see was green tail feathers. WE hollered Spit that out. Petui she went and the Parakeet hit the floor straightened his feathers out and walked off muttering.....

:lau That was forty years ago.

I had a cockatiel that flew loose in the house, and a cat. I was trying to teach the cat to leave the bird alone by rolling a can with pennies inside along the floor to startle the cat when she started going after the bird. One day the cat was getting ready to leap, and i grabbed the can and tossed it. Hit the cat dead on the head and knocked her out. The cat never chased that bird again. And she was fine when she woke up, looking a bit confused. That was back in the 80's.

Max seemed very good with the first chickens we had...but we always maintained close contact with him in case. We were working near the barn and Max came out of the grass with one of my Silkies in his mouth. She was already gone. Well, DH got so upset and scolded the dog into a shrinking black huddle of fur on the ground...so much more upset than I did (probably expecting me to get upset at him, I don't know.) He got so upset I didn't even have to get upset...I had to calm him down instead. Max has a very tender constitution and he has never looked at another chicken again...lol.

We got a lovely slow, soaking rain today...an inch and four tenths. With all the wet we've had, it's almost surprising we were getting dry. The weeds had gotten away in the garden, so the boy mowed everything down and I went about tilling it last night. "Trying" is a better description. It was hard as a rock and the inch or two I managed to scrape turned into such a fine dust that I had to till against the breeze only or risk getting covered in wafting dirt...lol.

This rain is exactly what we needed to finish the spring crops and bring the pastures back. I hope to till the garden and make actual progress this next time...lol.

I'm curiously waiting to see if the two pairs of guineas appear sometime the end of this week or early next with keets in tow. I believe it should be close to 4 weeks any day now. :fl Oh, and the guinea keet with the questionable feather structure looks completely normal now. I haven't changed anything, I haven't been anywhere to get feed...the keet may have been at an awkward feather stage? At this point, that's what I'm inclined to think about it.;)

DH must've lost his mind. We got two smaller coops (did I already mention this?) They are set up and ready to go. I want to paint the interior with a couple coats of bright white VOC paint to help make cleanup easier. I'm also going to price out rubber horse type mats to lay on the floor so they can be pulled out and dumped to make cleaning easier. :yesss: They may need a bit of re-manufacturing...but we'll know in time.

The idea is to use them for breeding groups during the spring/summer and to possibly house the OEGBs for the winter. It's a work in progress.:clap

Oh yes, the ducks! They're growing incredibly fast. We had a busy weekend and I can see that they've grown more! I hope to get a pic soon.
