The Old Folks Home

Dad always had that Wheatena stuff, loved it. Haven't had it since I was a kid.
DD#4 loves grits so we have them once in awhile. I'll cook up a batch give her what she wants with milk and sugar. Then I'll add sharp cheese, butter, milk, garlic, to the rest and top it with over easy eggs for DW and me :drool
Actually it's not always grits, sometimes it's corn meal mush.

Oh wow how funny. When I first move to Al. I could not find cream of wheat or other hot cereals we ate. So I bought grits, I tried flavoring them with sugar and milk, jelly and everything I could think of. My kids hated them!
When the kids went to school and learned how to eat them with butter salt and pepper they lived grits! Haha
I had no clue!

All you being affected by Nate, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Stay safe.

Is is Monday yet? Geesh, I got up this morning after playing tag team let the dogs in let the dogs out with my husband around 4:30 this morning. I have a sign hanging on the back door that says "Agenda for the Day: Let the Dogs in, Let the Dogs Out....) and swore it was Monday. Even told DH, no mail today and he promptly informed me that it was only Sunday, not Monday. I still wasn't convinced. Then I heard the rumbling of the Amish buggies crossing the creek bridge on their way to church and I realized yep, it's Sunday all right.

Weather is absolutely GORGEOUS here today. Highs in the 70s, no wind, lots of sun. No rain until I think Tuesday. Yeah, just in time to muck things up again after half way drying out. But it makes me feel bad for all of you dealing with the tropical storm. Stay safe, please.

Grits! :drool I LOVE grits.

There are so many wild berries here on our property and the majority of them are edible. I've learned which are and which aren't and love going for walks in the timber and being able to reach out and pluck off a handful of berries to munch on along the way. We have a form of wild olives that are delicious. I was disappointed that the bush didn't bear fruit this year. Next year I'll hopefully be battling the deer for them.

What we have is an over abundance of acorns. I mean TONS of them. So many that the ground is covered with them and you have to walk on them to get anywhere. The funny thing is that the deer aren't decimating them the way they usually do this time of the year. The bucks are generally pigging out on them but maybe there are just too many acorns and he deer population is down.

When I was 14? Hid three $50 bills rolled up in the end of my 12ga shotgun. Worked in the bluestone quarry every summer vacation, winter/spring break etc. If I didn't spend it eventually mom and dad would run short and 'borrow' $ (never pay it back) to buy stupid stuff like food.

When I was a kid, from about 8 on, I always had ways of making money, collecting and returning bottles, mowing lawns, whatever. My mom required that we split any money we made and give her 50%. The idea was to "teach us how to save", but like you, that money seemed to always disappear, but eating was something that us kids really enjoyed doing. She had envelopes with each of our names on them (5 kids). Needless to say, I never saw any of that money back.

You can make flour out of acorns. They are good natural dewormers. Pigs and goats love them. You can feed them to chickens too if you peel . I used to cook them to make them more palateable. Only issue is a lot have worms in them but the animals don't care. We have some oaks here but not like in TN, they were everywhere!

Do you have to leach them in order to grind them into flour? Or eat them in general?

Think I'll head out and gather some to peel and chop for the chickens as a treat.

Thanks for the tip.

Yes! Beet greens are very tasty! I like mustard greens the best and chard.

It is nice to be able to find greens in the store fairly regularly now

I grew up eating cream of wheat and loved it.
I will eat grits once in awhile.

DD #3 called about 30 min. Ago she was on her way to Walmart to get a wet vac she has 2" of water on the floor though out the house.
She's in Pensacola.
She was not able to get renters insurance when she moved in because hurricane season had already started.
I am so sorry!

I hope she does not lose too much of her things
