The Old Folks Home

No power might be up to a week. 60 percent without in this area. I stink.
 That seriously stinks. I was only w/o power for 3 days once, during a freeze (and DH was in Arizona visiting his new twin grandbabies and our car was at the airport). He was seriously threatened if he EVER did that to me again. Of course I was probably just sleep deprived because I had to stay up for three days watching the fireplace to keep the pipes from freezing. oh, and there was no fuel for the generators. Fortunately I knew how to attach the hand pump to the garden well. I really really hope your power is not off that long. Are you on city water?

Happy Halloween everyone!

My standard sized birds decided to pull their own trick or treat prank on me. One of them decided to die overnight. Geesh, my question of 'who died' was answered by ME! ME! as she lay flat on her belly in the coop. She was one of my Marek's resistant Buff O's too so crap crap CRAP! When I checked her over she was of good weight, no signs of illness but she did have a small prolapse that had went undetected. Infection there? More than likely. She was very stinky and her fluffy butt had hid the problem.

I stand and watch my birds a couple of times a day just to make sure nothing is going on that I need to hop on and treat/cull and this gal flew right under the radar.

Down to 18 standard sized birds now but I need to go out and count noses to be sure.

I wish there were orange orchards around us.I'd love to get my hands on a few of those water totes.
Even up here in the frozen tozen land there are several people selling them. We got ours free. #2 stepson brought us two from his company where he works in the burbs of Milwaukee but up here the food grade ones usually sell for around $50 or so depending upon size, more if you need them delivered.

I'm going to have to start looking around for them. Those are just too darned handy not to have a couple on hand. We are pretty low tech here. Yes we have electricity, but we also have a gas generator on standby. We heat with wood and have kerosene lamps. Our weak point is our water supply, We do have the ability to collect water, stock tanks, etc. We also have two ponds that would give us water to flush the toilet. I wouldn't use it to water the animals though due to the high level of bacteria/parasites/critters in it. The dogs drink it regularly but the chickens...well heck, it's probably cleaner then the mud puddles they like to drink of instead of there waterer.

But our drinking water is rural water/city water. If it goes down it would be good to know that we had some back up storage containers.

A shade under 60 and if I end up on the ground I look like a very bad wind-up toy getting back up, hands on the ground in front of me and using my hands to walk me backwards back up. Where in the heck did my knees go?
Let me know if you find them, my knees are probably keeping yours company :lau
