The Old Folks Home

Well I guess if they haven't done anything in it, the box doesn't fill up any faster right? An interesting toy for some cats?

So very true and kept him occupied... my Bandit likes to take meat out of the sink but drops it on the floor then Moose my lab gets it

We are owned by 5 cats. Cash is half Siamese that one of our patients gave us. He is 17 now and we got him when he was 7 or 8 and is just a super cat. Last year this time he was diagnosed with severe diabetes and we were certain we were going to loose him. DH finally stumbled upon a forum for diabetic cat owners and somebody there turned him on to a zero carb food for old cats called Young Again. We were at our wit's end trying to keep him going. He was up to 12 units of insulin a day and still running accuchecks in the 500+ range. Within a few weeks, he was off insulin, gaining weight and acting normal. Our big challenge with him now is keeping him out of the other cat's food which will cause his blood sugar to spike again. The vet told us to shoot for a blood sugar under 300 for him. Now it's under 100. We'll take it. Given he's an old cat we are shooting for quality of life. The only ill effect we notice with him is that he can't jump up as high as he used to but hey, neither can I lol.

The other 4 are a big taffy colored neutered male, all 18 plus pounds of him, and three females. the oldest of the three was lost for a month, getting loose and disappearing until one day she showed up at our sliding glass doors as though nothing had happened. She is spayed and when we took her to the vet afterwards, we found that she had only lost an ounce and developed a taste for earth worms. The other two are a little grey and a little calico. The grey is just a sweety and a sister to the big taffy male who gives cuddles and kisses and a little psycho calico who is truly nuttier than a fruit cake.

We never turn an animal down when it comes to our door. We figure God had guided them to us for a reason.

In our household cat and dog hair are both a condiment and a fashion statement.

Yep, saw that on pinterest and got a chuckle out of it. Sure sounds like home. A friend was here once and found a cat hair in a cookie I had baked. I congratulated her on being the prize winner of the day. She used to have cats so she understood the joke.

We also could do a Swifter commercial, you know, our hair balls have hair balls. I have to dust mop every day and do a major vacuuming twice a week. DH says the only thing we don't have are chicken feathers floating around the house. To which DH says 'give it time!' :lau

We never intended on having 5 cats and 5 dogs, it just sort of happened. We lost one dog last December to stroke, our cattle dog has maybe another year if he is lucky from the DM that is progressing in him. Our border collie is 13 now but still going strong outside of being a bit deaf and arthritic. The two youngest are just 4 with a lot of life a head of them. DH asked me when I wanted to get another pup as we don't want to be without a good tough farm dog and I told him not for awhile. I don't think the two youngest would be good with a pup. They are both pretty possessive dogs and we have to help the dog with the neurological disease so much that we couldn't do a pup justice right now.

It's been 4 years since Bubba and Sissy, also known as Buck and Spot found us. I told DH the odds were that when we were ready for another dog, one would find us the same way the last three had.

Pet hair out the wazoo here, too. I have a Roomba that runs daily and there is STILL HAIR EVERYWHERE. We keep them out of my sewing room, the formal living/dining room and the guest rooms upstairs, but the rest of the place is owned by cats (and soon to be a dog). I enjoy having them more than I enjoy a pristine house.

For the husband who doesn't want to clean a litter box, it's one cat. There will be one poop and maybe 3 pees a day. And be thankful he doesn't have to take it out to walk it and to do its business when it's 30 below.

I have dust bunnies you could put a saddle on and ride. Very scary when the vacuum attempts to nullify them. & cannot. No pets but I think I am having an exceptionally difficult molt of snow white hair. Usually I have my hair very short but, last several months let it grow out. I know I haven't seen a molt like this one before. :barnie
