The Old Folks Home

OK, weather change is here... cool: 40°f, pretty windy, & gray outside. A little damp, but not as much as the gray sky would imply. I've fed the goats, they're happy, have started a fire in the furnace in preps for several days of cold weather (supposed to be down to 21°f tonight :tongue), put a 10 pound smoked shank ham in the oven to warm up, and now I'm :caf with a nice large mug of freshly brewed Dunkin' Donuts blend coffee. Bought it for my favorite oldest daughter when she was here as she likes it (with pumpkin spice creamer no less). I drink tea, hot or cold, but last night got a wild hair and made a pot. It was good (sans the pumpkin creamer... I prefer french vanilla :drool) so I decided to make another pot this am. Also eating a banana for breakfast. Figured the potassium would do me good. Not really hungry though at the moment (maybe something wrong with me?).

So things to look forward to: using the jacuzzi during sub freezing temps, tonight's football game as well as several others this coming weekend as there are like 4 or 5 games this week that have major playoff ramifications. OK, so maybe only important to the players and football fans, which I am one...

Deb, so glad to hear you're having positive feelings/dreams/thoughts.

@dsqard So good to hear from you. Hope all is well with you in your (relatively) new environment.

For all you folks who CHOSE to live in arctic conditions... more heat to ya! :lau Try not to freeze!

Ron, is the lack of seniors due to the cost of living being high?
It might be! Cost of living is 31 out of 50 states. Much better than California at 49th though.

I did have to wait a couple of minutes for frost on the windshield to clear. It was not cold enough to freeze water though.

I hope we get rain soon!

Thanks, I am getting on, here but pretty much speed reading. My mental attitude right now is pretty dang positive... doing a lot of dreaming that is different from what I normally do... I keep a dream journal if it seems important...

Not Religious but spiritual and I listen to many things.

deb
Big hugs Perchie! :hugs

The 5 gallon bucket with the 90 degree pvc elbow has been working really well for the bantams. I think it just that the feed level in the bucket was a little on the low side and somebody decided to try and sit on top of it.

I'd like to make one of the feeders that I saw on Pinterest using a big 25 gallon tote with the 90 degree pvc elbows. I think it used 6 elbows. I also saw one of the garbage can feeders with the elbows. Since my feeder is inside I decided to go with the 5 gallon bucket and I have to admit that until today I have had zero waste from it.

I hear ya Deb. As I've gotten older I've gotten more spiritual than religious. I told my husband the other day that the neighbors would think I'd flipped out entirely if they ever saw me standing in the middle of the pasture doing a Cherokee prayer while facing the four points of the medicine wheel.:barnie

It's good that you have a spiritual connection, especially now. You really seem to have a great attitude about what you are facing and I wish I could give you a big hug and tell you to keep up the good work. So I'll just do this.:hugs

It's been mostly nice here. The last few days it dropped down to -15C (5 F) but it's been hovering around -5C to 5C. That's been really nice! It's warming to -5 today and its supposed to as high as 2-3 C the next few days. The only thing about the nicer weather is all the ice. I've been careful to tread where there's little ice. Last thing I want to do is fall down and break something...lol.

It's been a crazy week. Last Saturday, Mr. January, an OEGB went missing and we could hear his muted crows and figured he fell down behind the only cupboard there is in the shop. After moving most of the shelves and items from around, we couldn't see him in behind. I grabbed a pail to stand on to get a better view on the top and who was sitting under the pail but Mr. January. Our goal was to clean the coop after we had a coffee, but Dh was feeling nauseous. That progressed into discomfort and then to pain in his lower abdomen. By 7:30 pm we were on our way to emergency. All tests/bloodwork came back negative...but on the slim chance with Dh's history of clots, they gave him a blood thinner and booked A CT scan at the city hospital.

The radiologist came out and spoke to us explaining that DH has a large clot, about an inch long, in the large artery to the small intestine. Thankfully it was not occluded, meaning there was still some blood flow past the clot. I've certainly learned a lot about the mesenteric arteries, mesenteric ischemia and all the facets that go with that.

Sunday was spent waiting while they did more tests and talking to the doctors. I've been in every day except yesterday. So far, so good...he's on blood thinners taken twice daily. It appears no major damage was done to the tissues of his intestine. He is on food again. They've done tests on his heart which have been clear. He still has tests that will are to be done, but they'll be done as an outpatient.

I've already received a call from the doctor who saw him that first night in emergency about follow up on the reports he'd received back so far. We're impressed that he made the right call on starting DH on blood thinners going on our information alone about DH's past history of clot... even though all tests had come back negative. We also liked that he questioned why DH hadn't been sent for a workup on clotting factors prior to this since he's prone to clots. We wish someone had followed up with us on that or someone had mentioned something and we could've followed up. I think DH is going to stay with him at this point for his doctor.

When Dh went in for his second surgery the docs/staff didn't even listen to our concerns because the clot had never been confirmed. It was a small town emergency that didn't have the tests to confirm the clot. Even now it gives me the chills knowing now that he should've been on blood thinning medicine when he'd experienced such a major episode. There was zero follow up. He was gray and he couldn't breathe when I took him in...it progressed so fast. That was by far the worst attack so far. Frustrating to look back. We've learned a lot now. We're still learning...lol.

Hopefully I'll be getting back into the swing of things now that I'm back home more...lol. :)
