The Old Folks Home

It rained today, so didn't get quite as warm as predicted. Now, the rain has stopped, and it's about 64 degrees out. Loving it!

We will be at of above record temperatures this week. No rain in the forcast which is bad news! The hope was the La Nina would end in February and we would get rain and snow for February and March. If we don't, then there is close to no rain until Next October.

Back to drought!

My driveway is an ice disaster after the rain .

Be Careful out there!

Yep, and my Dad said the "conserve water" requirements have been dropped because the prior rain brought the reservoirs back up. We agreed that people have very short memories. They best be planning to go back on water restrictions.

No rain = drought = fires.
Rain = growth ... followed by inevitable drought = fires
Fires followed by rain = mudslides

Just for the record. I hate change. It's not a 'getting older' thing. Always been that way.

So when my credit card company sent me a 'new' credit card replacement, like they do every three years, much to my dismay it came with a letter explaining that they were switching from MC to Visa and we would have new numbers, blah blah blah. Not happy. Not only do I have the old number memorized, but I have our utilities, etc set up to be auto paid through the credit card. I had to set this morning and reset 5 accounts to the new, yet to be memorized, card number. One site took me 25 minutes just to get to the section that let me edit my autopays. "Are you REALLY who you claim you are? Please check your email for a token number. Are you REALLY REALLY sure you want to do this? Before we can let you access your information to edit please check your email for a token number. Are you REALLY REALLY REALLY sure you want to do this? Please check you email..."

I kid you not. Three times I had to jump though their hoops and that was only for our cellphone account.I finally finished at 10:30 having started at 8:30. Two hours of life I will never get back again. We don't use the credit cards too often but they are handy to do autopays with or I would just send the cards back to them with a nicely worded note of what I think of their disrupting my happy little routine.

I went out to take care of the chickens then. It is just plain freaking cold. We have had the stove blazing all morning and the temp in the house is hovering at 69-70. Usually it is around 75 76. Birds are handling it better than we are although nobody wants to venture outside. I left the doors cracked for ventilation for them. They are calling for snow off and on for the next two days. Not really too much in accumulation although with the weather service, they say snow and I just wait to see how much we get.

You guys with lots of ice, stay safe. Remember. sometimes it's just not worth risking going out unless it's an emergency.

Pretty much correct!

We now have metered water which is a type of forcing us to conserve. The cost of wather has gone up too. I used less water last month than the same month last year but the water\sewer bill was higher. Last month was $125.00 which will be the lowest month this year. In the summer I expect it will be $150.00.

I am one of the lower water using households too. Others pay $300.00 or so per month

But now you can use the new card at Costco!

:wee

True!! I did enjoy the change when Costco dumped AE and went to VISA. I don't have a Costco VISA card but now I can use my LLBean VISA and not have to remember the checkbook.

@microchick, yeah that really does suck. And it is just "lovely" when they want to send a text to your phone for the token number. Well guess what, our cell phones don't work at home. SOMETIMES you can get a text IF you have the phone in the right place in the house. Mostly the battery just goes dead as it constantly looks for signal.

WAY back when there was really bad drought my aunt (who lived in Mill Valley) was telling me about saving the dish water, the shower water, etc for the garden. When the drought was over people had gotten so good at using less water that the bills went up - to cover the administrative costs.

No complaints about our water. Our average bill is 30$ It will drop to 27 during the winter and go up to 31 during the summer months. I use a stock tank to catch rain water off the metal barn roof and use it to water the garden in the summer. Thinking about getting a second one this summer.

The funny thing was, Verizon said, check your email for your token number. About the time I clicked on the email, the cell phone was chirping away. They had sent it via text. The next ones they sent to my email.:rant

Got on line for Costco.....60$ for a membership? :gigAt least Sam's Club used to give free memberships to service veterans and medical personnel. Don't know if they still do that or not as we don't have a SC anywhere near us or a Costco for that matter.

That happened here too. The new water system was paid for with loans and Government grants. We were so good at conserving water that the rates are going up 5% per year due to not meeting usage amount to pay the loans.

It is quite sad really
