The Old Folks Home

I drink coffee in the evening. Apparently I have a high tolerance for caffeine....

Use to live with a cup in my hand cannot do it anymore
back and forth between threads had a new person worried about hatching got them over there pronto just having fun

That Cemani hen looks like if you stick a hand in there with her you will be pulling back less fingers than you had when you started. That is a great mamma especially with grafted chicks.

Thanks Chicka. Babies are super cute. Thinking I have 5 BBRs. DH agrees and that is fine. I'm betting 3 cockerels and 2 pullets. I heard cockerel alarm calls on the way home from two different babies. The little one with pasty butt is doing better. I did some trimming and olive oil and she is pooping pretty normally now.

I have a little stuffed monkey christened 'cuddle monkey' that I put with chicks. Took them a bit of time but they finally found it. So cute to see one burrow in under one of the arms and just see it's little butt sticking up in the air.

Do you always give peeps a critter to cuddle ?
I started the cuddle monkey tradition with my last hatch last year. Had a hen that had a staggered hatch, darn it. She would hide eggs way under her so I wouldn't find it when I did an egg count. When the chicks hatched, one hatched then two days later two hatched. I had this little stuffed monkey that I used in a display for kid's frame in our office. It is fuzzy and not real big and intimidating. I set it in a corner of the brooder along with a mirror and the first chick that hatched immediately utilized that little monkey and mirror. I folded the stuffed monkey's arms and legs into a nest and the chick cuddled right down into it.

This is the second time I've used Cuddle Monkey. I just thought it would be comforting to little chicks who have been shuffled around and traumatized by a car ride with a silly human that was clucking and making little mother hen sounds to them. They seem to be really warming up to it. They slept most of the afternoon, some with their heads resting on "monkey's" legs, one tucked under his arm with it's little butt in the air and one with it's head on the toy's belly. They seem to like it so I'll employ 'Cuddle Monkey' when my four chicks hopefully make their debut.

Probably needs to be a disposable monkey! Lots of poop happens.

Surprisingly enough, I thought that would be it for Cuddle Monkey also but nope. I think I brushed one little turd off of a leg, took it outside, beat the chip and dander out of it, brushed it thoroughly and sprayed it with lysol. He was good to go. I imagine it will have to be retired and a new stuffed toy bought. But for now it is once again a surrogate mother hen for little chicks.

The worse disaster to befall Cuddle Monkey was when the dog got a hold of it and chewed off a leg. She thinks all stuffed animals are hers. Luckily I was able to stitch his leg back on. Now he hangs (velcro on both hands and feet) from a wire shelf in our hobby room awaiting for his services to be required again.

I have to admit that at first I was a little hesitant about using it. The toy had been in the office for years. Then I had a revelation about the cleanliness of a hens belly and decided that "Monkey" was probably cleaner.

When you need to replace Cuddle Monkey, get something washable, and toss it in the washing machine as needed.

Vacuumed, and ran the floor scrubber. Ready for next round of assorted goop and sticky stuff.

The temps are going down some. It'll get down to the high 40's this weekend, then will begin climbing back up. Good daytime temps. Not too hot, not too cold.

Well we did not get rain today that was a big plus
fell over my feet somehow landed on Moose my big cuddle bug
he did not mind at all baked my little bread bowls again they make great sandwich
size made them smaller again instead of three loaves there is 18 mini loaves
