The Old Folks Home

I did have chicken pox as a child, and I will be 60 next month..so, pretty sure I will get the shot. I have a neighbor that got shingles on his hand, and partly up his arm. He said it hurt like heck. Talked to a nurse, she says there is a poor lady that comes in with it, it keeps coming back! Ugh, I thought if you got it once, it was like the chicken pox, once for most kids. But no, this stuff keeps coming back, and more often for some. She says this poor lady has it on her head. :/
SCG..no way there is a better old folks home than here. :D

My daughter has had shingles 4 times. At 3months, 2, 6, and 13. It wasn't to bad when she was little but that last time it hurt and took longer to go away. The doc said as she becomes an adult each time will get worse. Her second time, she gave me chicken pox (I was 24). Having dealt with shingles I vote get the shot if you can, it isn't fun

Hard to beleive but in a generation or two the shingles and chicken pox will be a thing of the past. My kids are of the generation that are vaccinated against chicken pox. No chicken pox-- no shigles.

Does it matter whether you had chicken pox as a kid?

Have you done the nasal mist before? I don't like needles either, but not sure I would like the mist any better.

Sorry about the little boy, that is too sad for words. It just shouldn't happen. If you can't make yourself donate blood, maybe you can talk some friends into doing so.

There have been some studies of immunity and most people over a certain age (read: 60+) have antibodies to chicken pox even if they don't remember a significant outbreak or were told they never had it. That means they were most likely exposed... and can get shingles later on. You can request an antibody titre to confirm that you were exposed, but even the CDC doesn't recommend getting a titre at this time to confirm, they just recommend the vaccine with an "unknown" chicken pox history.
And the vaccine is under the skin (subcutaneous) not a muscle shot, so it's less painful (in theory).
I have done the FluMist for a couple years now, this will be my 4th year, maybe 5th, I think. It's pain free, and only slightly embarrassing. The pharmacist I go to has to squirt it up my nose and then it drips out a little bit. I don't like people getting close to my face let alone looking up my nostrils, but I need the vaccine and this is the best way to do it for me. The mist is approved to be used up to age 49.

the wont mind blood with a little xanax in it

Gotta find a prescriber first, and then a ride home. I'd rather just wing it (and possibly cry, and perhaps threaten the nurse).
