my dh's worst fear is needing and getting addicted to pain killers. He has been is a lot of pain with his legs due to the crushed disks and he refuses to take any pain meds.
I don't think I have pain anywhere near the level that your DH has, or what some others here have to deal with or have dealt with. Also, some folks are an addiction waiting to happen and only they know themselves for sure in that way.

I have a fairly high pain tolerance but with continuous and prolonged pain comes many adverse side affects... lack of motivation, poor mood, poor sleep, decreasing physical strength, capability and dexterity, etc. Constant pain is not good. I get a scrip from my primary care doc for oxycodone (mild in comparison to some pain killers but still supposedly addictive). it's for 24 pills & I only take one when the pain has been there for too long to get a temporary break. The bottle will typically last me 12-18 months. The doc can clearly see from when I get refills that I am not abusing it. Perhaps your DH could try something along these lines?

The way he's dealing right now might be worse for him in the long run than taking the occasional pain killer. I don't know... I hope he can get the situation fixed sooner rather than later.
