The Old Folks Home

Well my chick count is up to 4 with one more external pipping and another internal pip. I woke up to a dead chick this morning. Don't know what happened. Hen had pulled it from the nest. It was fully formed but looked like it hadn't absorbed all of the egg yolk and it ruptured. Wondering if this hen like the other didn't like the feeling of movement under it and pulled it from the egg before it was ready. It was zipping last night at 9 when I last checked them.

Not wanting to take a chance with the remaining two eggs so I pulled them from the hen and returned her to the flock. Her eggs went under the second broody that is left. She has a chick hatched and is acting like a proper mamma.

So I started with 4 broodies and 18 eggs. Down to 4 chicks and 7 eggs remaining to hatch.

Told DH my Brinsea with me turning them has better hatch rates than these girls have had. Getting two good broodies out of the group is better than nothing though.

100% rate hatch is better though.

Wow, I was thinking ahead, what you said before I read it...better hatch rate in bator. I've only had a few broodies through the years. I put babies that hatched in my bator under them. Its fun to watch them for sure.

That is a great way to go!

Thanks.

I have to get up a trellis for hardy kiwi, three yrs old now and they are starting to take off. Have to get a new male though, stupid chickens dug the only one up last yr and it didn't live.[/QUOTE

Sorry you lost your Male plant.
Your chickens look nice.

We are going to put 4x4s in the ground and use some of the welded wire for the top framed in. So the grape cluster will hopefully fall through before they get to large. I'm hoping with more plants we will be able to get some. Lol
