The Old Folks Home

Found one of my younger hens dead in the coop today. Ascites (aka Water Belly). She was running around just fine yesterday. I thought when they got it, they tend to get a bit lethargic, lay around, or be less active, and have possible respiratory issues. She didn't. She was out running around just like the other one. I'm positive of my diagnosis. I double checked all the others just to make sure there isn't something else going on too. Nope, they're all fine. Even the old gals are spunky, laying, and doing fine.

:hugs
I am sorry you lost one!

chickens are prey and try to keep up the look of health until the end. If you see one looking sick, it is very sick.

The rest are likely fine

This is probably the biggest spider I've seen so far in Missouri. The golden orb garden spider. These guys appear in August in high grass or weeds. I've walked into several webs and been almost face to face with one of the spiders. They are huge. Not as big as a tarantula which are in southern Missouri, but we've seen spiders with thoraxes that are the size of nickels.

I broke my two year record and pulled two ticks off of me yesterday. :rant 10 days worth of antibiotics ahead of me now and hope I don't have a reaction to the bite. Doctor thought I could be sensitive to tick bites now and react badly to them since I was treated for Lyme....twice....They were only on me for 8 hours so hopefully I'll be okay:fl.

I like that spider!

But keep it in Missouri :lau

I read an article about a place that you can send your clothes for deet treatment. It lasts trough a lot of washings.

I hope you do not react badly to the tick bites

Thanks penny, misty and ron, I'm hoping we found them before they had a chance to really get dug in deep.

@getaclue :hugs sorry you lost a hen but glad the others are all hale and hardy! I just hate it when one dies and suddenly you find yourself running outside every two hours just to make sure nobody else has keeled over.
