The Old Folks Home

@microchick , :hugs. True on the religion/sex/politics - especially in today's environment. It has been banned from all family discussions as SIL has no common sense about social interactions.

Hey, 'oldfolks', what's 'old'? My doctor keeps telling me to take it easy "You're not 25 anymore." My Mom lived to be 97. She always said, "Getting old is no sin. Acting old is." What's old ?
Truth from the wise Amen:)

Talking about hepa filters. We bought a vaccuum with them. It was a pain in the posterior. With 5 dogs and 5 cats, it was, vaccuum for 20 minutes, stop, clean all the filters, reinstall them, vaccuum for 20 minutes, repeat. Sometimes in shedding season, getting 20 minutes was pushing it.

We finally bought a shop vac and then bought heavy duty filtered bags for them. Success. I wouldn't trade my shop vac for the best Eureka on the market.
thank you...

My DW retired this year and can't work at any public school for 6 months. That includes substituting.

I do not think she would have to pay into retirement for subbing though. The odd thing is that districts pay subs different amounts. The Davis district pays less per day than the Woodland district.

Such silly rules when we are short on good teachers.

My district is the poorest paid in the valley. Sadly , hard to attract great teachers that way. Hence we get too many that need better skill. DS1 had GREAT math teacher for advanced math, she retired. DS2 got new teacher in her second year at the district. THis is an advanced math class, best 25 students. THEY are telling her she did the problem wrong, so she CHANGES the problem to be right. Half the students made a special trip to the priinciples office. It was a hard years. On one test DS2 got a 85, and as I am lecturing him that more studying will be needed, he interupts to say he had one of the highest scores. WHAT???? Class retook test. He barely made a 90 and high honors for the year. Enough though to start this fall in the advanced math class. Gotta keep him mind busy.

talking of spending money.....

......

2 of my kids are going on this fancy 1 week scout trip to DC....

And it turns out that ALL of the other scouts have smart phones....

and it turns out that the trip is set up as a super high learning educational thing where you go from one spot to the next... I think over 20 different spots, and check in and learn and such at each spot .... the entire time supposedly using an app that you downloaded onto your phone with a map and information and... stuff...

(kid 2 and 3, ages 17 and almost 15 are going)

kid 3 ( the almost 15 year old one ) had been lobbying for a phone.... he has been doing so much work during his free time... on his own without being asked... stacked up cords of wood, mowed and edged, fixed the mower, did maintenance on the snowmachines (his and his dad's), he has started cleaning the garage/shop ........

he has already shown good responsibility in regards to Internet usage...

I was impressed enough I was starting to cave... thinking that eh, maybe he should get a phone for his b day in Oct.

Oh, he also offered to pay for the phone, if we would do the monthly fee for sevice.

Soooooooooo

I am now wondering if I should shell out my own big bucks, and buy a new Samsung... uh... is it 9 now? They have a buy 1 get one free.... then kid 3 would get the second Samsung.

Kid 2 would get my old Samsung, an S5.

More money than if I just let kid 3 buy a phone (I think the LG40 was about 100, and that is about what he wanted to spend).

It would be nice if kid 2 could at least get a phone for the trip to DC.... but we don't have a still well functioning old one to do a pre-paid plan for a month..... unless I shelled out big bucks for the buy one get one free Samsung 9, then kid 2 could get my old S5 Samsung that still works fine.

thoughts....... thoughts ...... ?

My kids are on a scout trip. THe have track phones. ANd they died. However I hear via the old telephone game about what is going on. I would rather they visit with their friends than live on the phones. I encourage taking photos which they can still do, and buy momentos. A couple days are in Montreal area and white water rafting. HOME TOMORROW. NO smart phones here. DS2 had his carefully in his back pack but others trashed his bag and phone screen was in hundred peices. Had 2 weeks. grrrrrr.

Dh is going to retire at 65. But every day he wishes it was his last day at work.
And the closer you get the more that is in your mind!

I used a food mill with the fine screen. It worked great! The other way is to mash them and drain in a cheese cloth bag. That takes a couple of hours or so though. I am not that patient!
What is wrong with leaving seeds in? I prefer preserves to jelly.

Did wonder if there is a way to put a heppa filter on those shop vacs. THey just seem much tougher than the crap made today and called a vaccuum.
Not as an add on. You CAN get them but good ones are $$$$

Those that did not have a smart phone had to work with someone that did.
Collaboration is sometimes a good thing (and sometimes not if it is with the Russians ;)).

My district is the poorest paid in the valley.
Which valley? I've gone down to Northampton more times than I care to count.

I would be worried about a phone on a scout camp trip like that too. Make sure to pay for insurance!

Pulled cattails from the pond for 3 hours this morning and was WIPED, still worn out.
Did you save the tubers to cook/use? I understand they taste very similar to potatoes and can be used fresh or cooked. Since they are all natural, organic, and non animal based, perhaps you can use them to expand your picky housemate's diets? Just a thought... ;)
