The Old Folks Home

I have made a startling, I tell you a STARTLING, discovery.
I am not @CapricornFarm, I do not have her Energizer Bunny abilities. Pulled cattails from the pond for 3 hours this morning and was WIPED, still worn out.

Of course I AM a whole 9 months older than she is so that might be the reason ;)
I tell you that working outside wears everyone out! Hoping it doesn't rain so i can do more stuff outside tomorrow.
Did you try eating the cattails?

@CapricornFarm Found this guy ready to be picked tonight. Stem all dried up. Our best guestament is that it weighs somewhere between 10 and 12 pounds. There is one larger out in my little garden that still has a bit more drying to do.

Now to process the ugly thing!

It is a beautiful color. Like a sunset. I did some research over the weekend on how to process Red Warty Thing Squash and learned it's history. It is a heritage squash, a Hubbard crossed with a pumpkin and can be used for pumpkin pie and when the skin gets this beautiful red/orange color, the meat is particularly sweet.

Will I grow more next year. Yep. Love the rampant vines and huge beautiful leaves. Growing season was crappy this year. I'm almost afraid to see what it can do on a good year. I'll probably harvest 3 or 4 squash off my vines but good grief!

Impressive!

Another really great thing about those type squash Micro is that they'll keep for almost a full year with care. Just put in a cool, dark, dry place and it'll be waiting for you to use it come spring. LOVE Hubbard squash! One of my favorites. Used to grow them up in New England as a child. Some would grown to absolutely monstrous size. I couldn't pick them up.

I love the texture, think it's neat.

Hey Cap, how are you folks doing with all the rain? I know you back to a river and I think I saw flash flood watches/warnings for SW VA... Hope all is OK there. Looks like you're gonna see a lot more rain training north over you.
Yep, we had crazy hard rain yesterday, not too much today but they have flood alerts. Water was several inches deep in front of the workshop for a while!
We are way above the level of the river, and have any structures that will float, lashed to trees.
But there has been a lot of erosion on the dirt road we live on. It is not county maintained, so i am sure we are going to need more gravel.
Thanks for thinking of me!

Another extreme of weather. Drought to flood in a week, Oh My!
