The Old Folks Home

Unfortunately the predators around here wind up predatoring on things they shouldn't be preying upon. The coyotes keep the rabbits down but when the rabbit population drops they start preying on lambs and kids. Fox run out of rabbits, mice and squirrels and they hit the flocks. Same with hawks, owls and eagles only they have the benefit of being protected.

Once a year the Amish men get together and have a predotor drive, taking out as many predators that they can find before lambing and kidding season gets started. Usually in late January early February.

Not only does the food sorces the predators feed on have to be controlled but the predators then need to be controlled in turn....except for the birds of prey.

For them you use lots and lots of fence and nets!

Sorry you guys are having problems with squirrels! We don't have them in the valley..just up the mountains. I would imagine that some folks living up high in the bench area have them around. Our big problem here is, our neighbors cats. They don't bother the chickens.. but, they have ruined a lot of things in our front flower bed. I will have to pull a Bush out come spring.. pretty sure the cat urine has killed it. :( I have a beautiful large mum Bush out front. Noticed kitty poo around it. That did it. Put out our live trap. Yep...

How purty is this?

No one dropped a feather let alone a turd in that nest box?!

:lau
Mine seem to take aim for feeders, and waterers so they can poop on them or they hold themselves until the newly cleaned nest boxes are available. I've tried hanging the feeders with lids on them. The bantams kick the lids off and eat from the top of the feeder....or take a dump in them one of the two.

I think they enjoy seeing me dig the dirties out of them.
