DH looked up guineas last night, curious about them. I kept saying 'No" . . . .

I just love guineas

Sure they are noisey but so what? They are great early warning devices and again, better than karaoke.

My guineas are starting their free range training at christmas. They get fed with a voice call and a the sound of a bell. Provided they dont get turned into adobo too fast, they should return. They normally lay eggs in the morning so they will be let out between 12 and 4 each day.

Its a gamble but worth it.

I hatched them for the guy that keeps my Roosters--we have an arrangement. I do not know if he kept the Guineas.

I will check to see that their status is.

What is up with DH's and BF's wanting Guineas? My husband wants some and I tell him constantly......um NO!! They are so loud and annoying but then again everyone is not the same. He thinks they would be great and beneficial.


On another note...my Mixed Bantam Rooster was found dead in the coop the other day. Nothing seemed wrong with him, His comb didnt stand straight up and it was a little bit scabbed from the big roosters pecking him a little but they got along for the most part. What are yall's thoughts on what could happen? I don't think it was the cold either they are all in a pen together and it stays pretty warm. Our other bantam Rooster was fine. Any help is appreciated.

Often its just a case of SOURD Sudden Unknown Origon Rooster Dead - he may have an internal injury from a single blow

Suddenly dead chickens is scary. It usually is not something that will kill the entire flock, unless there are symptoms.

I have had this happen with hens--liver rupture. Roosters are less likely to have that problem.

Here in California I would send him in for a free Necropsy to see what happened.

Things to check on:

Do not feed rooster layer feed. Some of them will have Kidney damage from it and die suddenly.
Make sure they are not getting into rat poison or eating rats killed with rat poison. There is a new poison based on vitamin k depletion combined with vit D overdose that has a worse secondary kill than other types of rat poison.

here is a great simple adobo recipe that adds coconut and chilli.


1 whole chicken, jointed into 8 pieces with bone in
5½ fl oz coconut or rice vinegar
13½ fl oz coconut milk
2 fl oz light soy sauce
6 cloves garlic, smashed
3 cm ginger, peeled and thinly sliced
3 bay leaves
3 red bird’s-eye chillies
1 tsp freshly cracked black pepper
steamed rice, to serve


In a large non-reactive bowl, combine the vinegar, coconut milk, soy sauce, garlic, turmeric, bay leaves, chillies and pepper. Add the chicken and turn to coat, then cover with plastic wrap and leave to marinate in the refrigerator for at least 3 hours or overnight.
Transfer the chicken and marinade to a large, deep saucepan. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to low–medium and cook for 25 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through. Using tongs, transfer the chicken to a bowl and cover to keep warm. Increase the heat to medium–high and cook the marinade mixture for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened and reduced. Discard the ginger, bay leaves and chillies.
Return the chicken to the pan and warm through. Transfer to a serving bowl, scatter with extra chillies, if using, and serve with steamed rice.
