The Old Folks Home

I need to catch up with everyone but I wanted to make a quick post and tell you all about the past two days.

Yesterday, DH went down the road to one of our Amish neighbors to get parts for my tiller and came home super upset. He had mentioned to them that we had lost our cattle dog before Christmas and they spoke up and said that they had a litter of red heelers and would he like to see them. Of course he said yes. They lead him back to the pen and he encountered 5 mud balls with legs and tails. He said the were adorable what had upset him was the fact that they had tossed in a dead kid for the puppies to eat. They are about 12 weeks old. The boy taking care of them said that they had tried to take them to the pound as they couldn't find homes for them but the pound was full up so they still had them and yes, they are purebred.

DH came home and was so upset he couldn't sleep last night. I wasn't sure what to do either and told him I was going to sleep on it and let my little inner voice speak to me. I did and woke up this morning and asked DH what he thought. He said, 'how do we choose one or two knowing that the other three will wind up being killed and tossed in a ditch or worse?' I just shrugged and said 'We don't choose.' He gave me a puzzled look and as I gulped down coffee I said 'We don't choose, we take them all. We rescue them!' He immediately perked up and we went into action. Quick breakfast, jumped in the van and drove down the road. Long story short. Babies were cleaner, but smelled like dead goat. No dog food in the pen, water and a dog house for them. He said he would take 15 dollars apiece for them, but if we took two 10$ I just said 'what if we take all 5?' he said 5$ apiece.

Okay, we are insane. We loaded all 5 puppies in the van, ran into town for puppy food, collars and chew toys and now we have 5 Australian Cattle dogs in my brooder room waiting for their first baths. They go to the vets tomorrow for first shots and worming (they were feeding them raw rabbit) Are we going to keep them all? At least two but I tell ya, it's hard not to love these little turds. 4 Males 1 female. We've named two. Murphy and Ben.

Pictures to follow.
How exciting, and bravo for you!

Good for you would do the same Thank you

The landing part is fine on the dryer balls, it is the ripping them up that ruined them!

Since cats have sticky tongues, the had to be helped to get the wool bits out of their mouths

do not tell me the kittens got ahold of one

I don't think we could move fast enough to get the lids down. Our cats would have their feet hooked over the rim and bolting.

5 pups bathed. They smell less like dead goat now. The very idea feeding 2-3 month old pups dead goat and rabbit.:th

I seriously wonder about people some time. The pups are cleaner now and a riot. We need to figure out what to do about an outside pen for them. Our farm is fenced around the parameter only, mainly barbed wire so containment will be a challenge if not impossible. DH is blissfully catching up on the sleep he didn't get last night.

How quickly life can change. Losing our Dingo was hard on both of us and we miss that dog terribly. I look at these pups and one will cock its head just right and it like looking at a red heeler form of our boy. I told DH we did good. He just laughed and said he didn't know if we did good but we definitely did the right thing.

Penny, I can honestly see that happening. That is what is so danged funny about it. I asked DH this afternoon what if we found homes for two or three of them.Would we be forever wondering if we kept the two right pups? He just shrugged and admitted he didn't have a solution for that possibility. So yep, I can see us keeping them all.....

Our Hound/BC mix will warm up to them eventually. He's so funny right now. One of the babies barked at him and he ran for cover. The Jack Russell/BC mix is going to be a handful with that possessive Terrier mentality of hers. I think they will eventually just gang up on her and that will be the end of the trouble.

Figuring out how to housebreak 5 puppies at the same time. Now THAT's going to be the challenge!
