The Old Folks Home

Everything in that site is from the Foleys. and yes, he breeds for productivity. They lay a big round brown-creamy eggs. With them being bred to the standard, unlike hatcheries, they mature slowly, and their life expectancy is longer... DMRippies hens are 3 years and still lay decently.

I got some eggs from DM..those ones that he said would lay blue blue eggs..the leghorn/Ameraucana mix. She just started laying this past week. They are green green. No olive green, but a dark green. I should send him a picture of them. I was so hoping that it would be blue blue! Ariele..your girl is the last of my girls to lay that I've been waiting on. My Wheaten A. has, my leghorn mix has, and red sexlink has..have to have that large brown egg in there. I wonder what hers will look like. She is so pretty, and looks like a full grown hen now. Should be anytime.

Another of my Doxie. He loves to be under blankies. I'm surprised I caught him just laying
on top of this one. This is Brody. :) He will be a year in the middle of this month. Still a pup.

Wow, he is nice looking. And that last picture? Yep, blankies! Was the hotdog a little dress up time for Halloween? Pretty cute! I have a friend that has a Doxie too. And hers loves the car! My little guy not so much. Trying to get him to. He shivers the whole time he's in it.
My friends dog just had pups..dad was my daughter's black and tan boy..mom is a dapple..they got one dapple! Pretty color..pic for fun.

Thanks for sharing all of the cute Dachshund pics.

Were those the blue egg layer of the University of Arkansas?

I will be getting hatching eggs from those, so if they lay nice blue eggs I will let you know.

Sorry the Am-leghorn produced green; I would have expected blues also. I have been thinking of getting barred leghorns to cross with my black Am to produce large blue eggs. DM suggested it and a Am breeder suggested it as well.

I'm finding egg colors more complicated than it originally seemed to be. I have two lines of AM boys: one more of a green egg because his sisters laid more green than blue; and another line that should be more blue than green. I have looked at the AM card for egg color and the colors are an array of about 50 shades. from grays, to greens, to blues , and in betweens. :)

Late last summer I picked up ONE brown-chocolate egg-- looked like a huge NECO wafer in an egg- shape, that pastel powdery tan-brown. I have kept it. Only got one. ( I've lost a couple hens--perhaps one of those laid that egg.) Intriguing colors.

Try Wheaten AM with an SG Dorkng.

Not sure about University? I know he just had an add for some blue blue egg layers. The eggs he sent were white. He explained they would be, but the chicks should lay a very blue egg..it isn't blue at all. Very green. But I like it. :) I got a pretty blue egg from my Wheaten Am. last week, so I'm happy. The one from DM are larger than the Am. pullet's. I am thinking they will get bigger. The leghorn mix has become very pretty. Speckles all over her. Her body isn't real big, but larger than my leghorn. She as some puffy cheeks. So she's a cute one. I hope she lays as often as he said they would too. I can get pictures later..it snowed last night, and stopped, but it's snowing again. Winter is finally here.

I've been out for awhile so I'll try to keep this short:

Sorry for the loss of your doggie. He looked like he lead a very happy life.

As far as the end of life thing goes - I see way too many doctors unable to give up. Giving up is not such a bad thing, but it's engrained in doctors to always continue to try. I also don't think doctors explain the risk to benefits well for a certain treatment. It's usually "well we're going to try this" without having the serious discussion of what it's going to give the patient. Unfortunately I see it on a frequent basis. One sticks in my mind - the oncologist wanted to prescribe a med for a patient, but it had to go through the review process. During the process we had to speak to the caregiver daughter, and she was under the impression that the treatment would cure her father, when there was no way that that was going to happen, this was just to prolong (hopefully) for a few weeks. With all those side effects. I don't know if it was the oncologist who didn't explain it well, or the daughter that misunderstood... but it was an incredibly sad situation. Sometimes we pump people full of drugs with horrible side effects and don't let them psychologically deal with the end and enjoy what they have left.

Lastly, I got my tree and train platform up. The trains are my mom's from her childhood (1950s era) and the platform was made by my dad and grampy in the late 70's. My parents came up to visit and they cried when they saw it. I was glad to make them happy.
