The Old Folks Home

There is a thread for them. They were a University of Arkansas project and were commercial leghorns crossed with Auracana. The eggs look very blue in the pictures and the eggs they are hatching are blue. I may be getting the hatching eggs in January. They started laying again for Jim!

Sorry the Am-leghorn produced green; I would have expected blues also. I have been thinking of getting barred leghorns to cross with my black Am to produce large blue eggs. DM suggested it and a Am breeder suggested it as well.

I'm finding egg colors more complicated than it originally seemed to be. I have two lines of AM boys: one more of a green egg because his sisters laid more green than blue; and another line that should be more blue than green. I have looked at the AM card for egg color and the colors are an array of about 50 shades. from grays, to greens, to blues , and in betweens. :)

Late last summer I picked up ONE brown-chocolate egg-- looked like a huge NECO wafer in an egg- shape, that pastel powdery tan-brown. I have kept it. Only got one. ( I've lost a couple hens--perhaps one of those laid that egg.) Intriguing colors.

Ha! Talk about surprise in egg color!! The Blue EE...has laid an egg..it's brown! I only have one other brown egg layer now..sold my NH yesterday, and only have my red sex link that started to lay last week. Her egg is brown too..of course.

Well, went out to see how many eggs I had after all the morning commotion. There was the Wheaten Am. laying on three eggs..one of them was hers, the pretty blue..and two, brown eggs. I say what? To her..like she's going to understand the question I rip out at her...why are there two brown eggs? I just laugh, take them, and know where it came from. The EE is the only other bird that was ready to lay..and now, I am wondering if she was laying last week too, just taking turns with the sexlink, because those two eggs look the same. I gather everyday, I don't have a large flock. That pretty red/brown color. I love the dark brown ones. She doesn't have a pea comb, but a comb like a BO or even my sex link. Do you have blue buffs? Or, just the reg. BO, and it had an EE get her? lol...so funny..I was actually thinking, I really don't need three colored..blue or green..eggs. She would have made another blue, or green for me..but I had been thinking, I want anther brown egg layer. Got one!

She was the one making the noise when I went out to check for eggs..she was in a different area, and I thought, wonder if she laid over there and not in a nest box, little stink. My leghorn mix is in a nest box now. She will give me that green egg I've been talking about, and my leghorn hasn't laid yet today. She may not, she's slowed down from moulting, but still lays a good four days a week. Used to be everyday. Anyway, I have the leghorn, the leghorn mix, my wheaten, the sexlink, and that's all I thought I had laying. Until today. I now have 5 girls laying...too funny...a brown egg..completely unexpected. But happy!

Cynthis-- I"m sure DOnna would love to hear from you. SHe and I PM a lot discussing this and that.

SCG-- What a special moment for your folks to see the train set up!!

I have reaped the benefits of years of exposure to doctors, from those that focus on research to those that are primaries. ANd I have read an interesting history book that helped me to understand the omnipitent attitudes that are ingrained into them by the preceeding generation of doctors that train the young doctors. THe cycle continues . . .

THe doctors have a history of treating existing issues-- but a new phase is dawning: prevention.

DmRippy is a woman. :
And depends on which pens the eggs came from. she has several pens of super blue. I have some green, white, snd eome green with blue insides.

Arielle, the blue EE I'm talking about here..is yours! Not DM's...I don't mind the brown though...
and oh, someone said that DM is a woman? Oh dear, I just went to her photos, and saw a man only in one of them. Oh well. Good to know!

CYnthia, "THe blue EE laid a brown egg"--- do you remember what color egg this one hatched from?? As I remember, been a while, I sent blue eggs. My blue EE roosters doesn't run with the main flock; Blue Boy is with his easter eggers, which all lay a blue egg except for one, she lays a pink. I have a small group of chicks from that pen growing up, so I will have to watch for egg color.

You sent, marans, but not many, because they weren't laying well. Remember..I won them in a hatch a long. I waited, then I saw an ad where you had EE's for sale, I said, if they are laying a lot, I would take them instead. You sent 4 marans, two hatched, then the rest were green eggs. I kept the little blue girl. Have waited a long time. Will send a picture. Just tried sending pictures to DM, but only got one out..BYC must be slow today, or something si being change, it took like 3 mins. for it to down load..will try here..If not, I will come back later. I am putting up pictures of your blue, standing with the EE mix I got from DM. Pretty chickens!!
Well, tried , but still having problems with downloading..anyone else? Or is it me? I did a close up setting..may have to try taking pictures again later.

Photos are working fine now..Arielle, I sent you a couple of pictures to you. She is pretty...here is one of them for here.

That's the white leghorn mix from DM on the right, and my wheaten on the left. Everyone
