The Old Folks Home

THe cold here is frigid-- SCG YOu are north of here and probably much colder!! THis is TOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cold!! Everything freezes in a matter of hours. One hen was having trouble : crouch /huddled on the floor of the coop this morning. After the mass exodus I took her in the house where she has been ever since. Perched on the edge of the trash barrel. My son knocked her into the trash, and then retreived her. SHe has warmed up and spread here wings and ate a little yogurt and water. Hoping for some warm weather for her to get back out side. May put her in a different coop too. My hands are so cold I need to go get gloves. Wood stove is at full burn. Warm near the stove and cold elsewhere. A six dog night.

I can't even imagine how cold that is. One person said that his ducks freeze to the side of the water trough he tries to keep unfrozen if He does not get them out. He said it is like the kid in the movie that stuck his tongue to the flag pole.

I hope it warms up soon for you!

Well I do have to say the -2 this morning was like a dream compared to the rest of the week. It's going to be 20 tomorrow for a high, I'm not sure I'll survive that heat wave after what we've been through the past few days. I can say, without a doubt, that showgirls are cold hardy. Who would have thought?! I'm always shocked that it's the teeny tiny girls and the turkens that are out exploring when it's subzero and windy, and it's the big baby brahmas and the other large fowl that are wussies and huddle in the coop.

The ducks had ice chunks on them yesterday when they waddled off to bed. Our water is freezing in about 30 minutes. BF had refilled their bucket with hot water (they don't seem to mind what temperature it is on either extreme) when he left for work at 2. When I got home at 415, there was about an inch of ice on top of it. I broke it up with my foot and one of the ducks jumped right in. Idiots.

Arielle, get one of these:

I have one and it has made a giant difference with my wood stove. I know it's pricy, but it's worth every penny. My little Jotul stove had the same problem, and I'd be sitting in front of it to get warm, then wearing a blanket around the house because the rest of the house was cold. That thing distributes the heat like a blower on a stove, and really does make the whole room warm and doesn't interfere with the way the stove works. Mine's a couple years old and still works great.

Ron-- I keep the water dishes small to keep the ducks out-- they will squeeze into a turkey roaster for a swim!! lol Birds are definitely behaving differently, so I"m putting out more water dishes to be sure everyone is getting to water, and throwing more oats. Getting the corn out today.

SCG-- GREAT FAN!! Our stove has a built in blower. Technically I can shut doors to half the house and keep heat in the main part ( no water pipes in the far rooms of the house). Other wise I can close the door to the upstairs and force the air in a circle around the first floor. Of course the PC and TV are in the last room!!

Kids have been using rice socks and cats to keep warm.

YEsterday we hit 20 and Iwas running around outside in just a sweatshirt and a wool sweater underneath. Still needed hand covering!! Wet fingers stick to metal gates!

I know that feeling all to well. Had to leave my right hand glove stuck on the metal gate at the barn because it was wet.

Glad I was headed back to the house at that point and not just getting started. COME ON SPRING !!!

We actually got to between 30 and 40 degrees yesterday (depending on whether you were on top of the pass or down in the valleys) which was just in time for the storm that passed over to be freezing rain instead of snow. I would have preferred the snow actually because now everything has a thin sheet of ice on it. Driving in to work today was not too bad for us since we have an all wheel drive vehicle but we saw one lady off the road (she was fine) and one of our car pools of people went off the road too (they are fine as well, just needed help getting out of the snowbank). They have snow/rain predicted for us starting tomorrow through at least Tuesday. COME ON SPRING!!!

Spring will arrive here next wek-- or at least it will feel like it. COld rain on it's way. Oh heck, give me the frigid cold rather than the cold rain !!!
NOT! It will be a respite at best. My old bones fear a return of the cold and snow that will be even worse.

Was working Monday when we got the call of the 50-some car pile up. At first we were skeptical but it turned out to actually be 52 cars according to State Patrol. I-75 was shut down for several hours. Just so thankful our accident didnt have any deaths unlike the one just south of us in Hamilton Co (near Cincinnati) where the little girl was killed by the broken cable in the median. Her funeral was yesterday. So very sad for her family.
Today we have about an inch of snow and have several minor crashes all over the county. I can't imagine what it would be like in here today if we had gotten any ice. EVERYONE is always in a hurry around here :(
