The Old Folks Home

I eat, or give away, all of my Marans eggs. I would love to raise some more, but can't stand to see those beautiful roosters go to the pot. I kept the best one from the last hatch and now have the birds to be able to set up a breeder pen. I know that if I had pure Marans eggs, I could sell or trade them on BYC, but I have no experience with shipping eggs. These birds came from eggs that I got from a BYCer here locally that said they came from eggs she ordered from another BYCer. I guess I should ask her if they are from a "good" line. If they are, I would be more inclined to build a breeder pen. I guess I could build it big enough to house the Marans and the peafowl..... hmmmmmmm......
Lisa,
Those eggs I gave you came from my cull black copper hens, they were crossed with one of three roosters, a blue copper, a birchen, or a black copper. They definitely would NOT be breeding quality. Now , if you want to just breed "dark" egg layers, they would be great. The birds I have for breeding good Marans are really nice, but I couldn't guarantee that the hens laying your eggs came from those hens. If the dastardly racoon doesn't kill any more hens, hopefully I'll be able to hatch some more chicks to replace my nice hens, as I won't be able to get any more from the breeder I got mine from until next year.

Kowgurl - Thanks for reminding me. I'm sure you told me which were which when I was there, but since I can't tell the difference in the cull hens and the breeding quality birds I would never be able to remember.

When I got those eggs from you, all I wanted was something to hatch that was different from what I already had, and, as you said, dark colored eggs. I got both! The problem for me is that (what I am assuming are) the BCMs that hatched are so BEAUTIFUL in my opinion that they MUST be high quality.

I am no poultry judge, but all of my birds look good to me (they're my babies!) even the mutts (especially the mutts.)

I was not expecting to get breeder quality from you, or even pure bred, but I love the ones I did get and the eggs are so nice that I figured they must have been from your good stock. I know, I can be so goofy about these Darn chickens and once I decide which of the breeds I want to raise, I will work at knowing what I am looking at and for and hopefully develop an educated eye. I know I'm capable, I used to be pretty good sizing up halter horses.

As for these birds, I would only consider building a "breeder" pen so that the birds produced would be dark brown egg layers and not Olive Eggers. I would not be selling birds or eggs unless someone was going to eat them. Of course, I have been saying that I was going to start selling eggs for four years and I am still just giving them away!

I do plan to hatch some of the dark eggs this spring to see what hatches.

I know that feeling all to well. Had to leave my right hand glove stuck on the metal gate at the barn because it was wet.

Glad I was headed back to the house at that point and not just getting started. COME ON SPRING !!!

That's funny!

I froze to the ground today after upending the duck bucket for the night, I stood too long in one spot where I had dumped the water. Luckily it was an easy break, but slightly unnerving.

I didn't freeze to anything, but there's a nice slick mud running from one end to the other of the patio. Waiting for my washer to finish so I can throw my muddy clothes in next. YAY Me!!! Such a klutz!

We are so much alike, Kim! I just slid on my butt in the yard trying to step around chickens on an incline... Slick mud! Gonna be sore on one hip. But hey, the chickens finally scattered! Good thing I have a great washer. It's already used to the soiled throws I've been using to cover the sofa where Jack, Beth and Punkin perch in the evenings.

Hurts ta sit! LOL

OH!! Linda are you going to the Stockton show tomorrow?????

No. I have never been and I'm afraid I don't like crowds much. Besides, I'd probably go bonkers at everything I see. I'm quite happy with my pet-quality flock members and seeing real, well-bred birds of all types actually meeting SOP would be too much pressure for me. :/

I really have a hard time in crowds and I don't go anywhere at all much, but I can handle the show in my Chicken Zone. I do go off by myself a lot and then go back, but there's a lot of space and except the sale barn at times, there's not many tight crowed areas. And lots of space outside. Wish you guys were going.
