The Old Folks Home

For you that are dieting. I am thinking you have to do a certain diet..because of health problems? Or are you trying to lose weight? I've been losing some weight, I'm just doing my own thing, counting calories, but I've noticed, I eat better when I am trying to lose weight. So, that probably says something about how I ate before, and no wonder I'm trying to lose weight. I'm excited..I've lost a whole size since I started.

Cynthis, IMO I see health problems two ways. ONe, we acquire health problems because of what we eat, and two health problems can be reduced/eliminated by the foods we eat or don't eat.

For me, and my situation is a common AMerican issue, my body super reacts to a spike in blood glucose after eating. THe insulin overspikes, then the amount of insulin is too much and drops my blood glucose too low, so I get hungry again even if I just ate 30 minutes ago. ANd so the rollercoaster begins for the day. Easy to put on a lot of weight without much exercise to burn off the calories. So now, I am purposely trying to lose extra body weight and never gain it back. Currently I todder between maintenance and loss.

Very low carb dieting, shere the carb count is under 30 grams a day, invokes a response from the body with allows many people to lose weight when they can't on say a 1500calorie a day diet. The idea is to remove most of the carbs that use one biochemical path and use the fat utilizing pathway instead. So to keep the latter one functioning, drop the carbs down to 30 ( 3 cups of leafy greens, for ex), and eat meats, some fats. Many people do well when the 1500 calories a day is mostly derived from fats. For those that are in total rejection mode, there are plenty of sound medical studies that have looked at this, mostly in Europe. ANd this is an OLD diet, call "BAnting" that goes back to the early 1800's. In England, Dr Banting was and is a well respected doctor.

ANd as you mentioned Cynthia, when you can only eat a limited amount of food in a day, we suddenly become aware of making and eating good choices.

From a PBS program---eat these every day:

G= greens
O= onions
M= mushrroms
S= seeds and nuts

The onions and mushrooms are super cancer fighters. Mushrooms at 10 grams a day average intake resulted in somthing like 50% decrease in breast cancer cases in the study.

Bernie, the Filipino Chicken Phenom (aka my gardener) put together this 6x6 pond for our future ducks to swim in squares.

Here's my forecast for the day:

* ACCUMULATIONS... SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 4 TO 6 INCHES... ALONG WITH AROUND A TRACE OF ICE.

Okay, really. It's April 12th. Time to get a move on, Spring.

OH I hear you, it's nasty here too, just not as nasty as 4-6 inches, just possible sleet.

Now what can I plant that can manage a cold spring?? I'm lost, so I need ideas!!

Two weeks ago, we had frost. Last week, lows in the 40's meant I was still putting a blanket on a horse to keep him warm. This morning, I was awakened by a thunderstorm. I guess we went straight from winter into summer!

I am totally with you SCG. I am praying that spring is here to stay but I don't have a lot of hopes yet.

I am sorry for you all that are still getting snow and ice. Here, we will get the mowers out this weekend because the grass, clover, and other spring weeds have made the lawn look shaggy.
I have been mowing for a month now and will need to turn the sprinkler's on soon. It will be sunny and 82 degrees today.

Maybe I have misunderstood-- paleo is one of the low carb diets, so it should revolve around natural meats and vegies. I don't see it as a vegetarian lifestyle. I looked at paleo as I love meat especially beef, so I was under the impression that it had plenty of meats.

Some parts of the world have vegetarian diets because they do not have the means to acquire meat or other animal protein. Some areas of the world are so over populated that the wild sources of meat are gone. THey are actually in starvation mode. Living a healthy vegetarian or vegan lifestyle takes a lot of careful planning of foods and with AMericans growing to very large sizes for a human that takes a lot of protein and calories. In human history, omnivore eating included insects. In dire straights, we can still digest insect protein. I personally will wait until I am starving, and until then the chickens can have the grasshoppers and ants and grubs.

I try to eat the foods that don't need much processing to eat: nuts, berries, meats, fish, salads, hamburger , etc. AND chicken, AND turkey!!

"All natural organic" has a legal definition; if it meets that criteria , then the label fits. I personally see it as relative. The more alternative methods can be used the better for the land and our health. I would like to see the land better taken care of as we depend on it to feed, what are we at 325 million people.
That's not what the mislead medical people are pushing.
