The Old Folks Home

Maybe I have misunderstood-- paleo is one of the low carb diets, so it should revolve around natural meats and vegies. I don't see it as a vegetarian lifestyle. I looked at paleo as I love meat especially beef, so I was under the impression that it had plenty of meats.

Some parts of the world have vegetarian diets because they do not have the means to acquire meat or other animal protein. Some areas of the world are so over populated that the wild sources of meat are gone. THey are actually in starvation mode. Living a healthy vegetarian or vegan lifestyle takes a lot of careful planning of foods and with AMericans growing to very large sizes for a human that takes a lot of protein and calories. In human history, omnivore eating included insects. In dire straights, we can still digest insect protein. I personally will wait until I am starving, and until then the chickens can have the grasshoppers and ants and grubs.

I try to eat the foods that don't need much processing to eat: nuts, berries, meats, fish, salads, hamburger , etc. AND chicken, AND turkey!!

"All natural organic" has a legal definition; if it meets that criteria , then the label fits. I personally see it as relative. The more alternative methods can be used the better for the land and our health. I would like to see the land better taken care of as we depend on it to feed, what are we at 325 million people.

That's not what the mislead medical people are pushing. processed grains like flour and bread are discouraged.

As far as all natural organic...what the FDA and EPA cannot control fits within the definition just like with asbestos, only 5% of asbestos ever used causes the lung issues, but because the EPA cannot see any way for common industry workers to determine the difference, all asbestos is bad and will cost billions to take care of. And, what they don't tell you is that any silica dust (any of the silicon based minerals like quartz or asbestos) when ground into a fine dust and inhaled will cause silicosis (and seashell dust is harmful as well!). So, since pollution cannot be controlled, they don't count it against organic or all natural, but it's there just as it is in other food stuffs. And, if industry or farmers up steam use chemicals, how are they kept out of the water supply and your organic foods? Especially if they use a municipal treated water supply.

That sounds awesome!! WIll you put in plants? Can you "plant" duck weed?

Speaking of, I need some duckweed for our big pond. Anyone, preferably from a northern clime, got some they could part with?

Some people choose to add dairy. ALL of us experience stalls when too much dairy is consummed!! You are not alone! Nuts get me too.

THe sausages are a problem, as all the commerical products add sugar; and I stay away from the deli counter except for cheeses. I've noticed even deli roast beef gets my cravings roaring.

I use a lot of oo and butter both, and a little canola oil. Along with beef fats, and chicken fats, etc. Margarine-- I quit that over 20 years ago-- geez, the years are marching on. My kids have never had margarine. Even DH stopped buying it a few years ago. I follow Atkins because it is not as limiting as Paleo--this is what works for me. I love both broiled tiny cabbages in oo with salt AND frozen broccali in butter. I figure it is ALL better than what most SAD dinners are.

My kids like this:

Mix in a mug: 1 T butter melted, 1 T cream, 1 whole egg, few drops peppermint ext or vanilla
Add: 1T cocoa, 1 T splenda, 2T ground almonds.
Microwave about 1 minute.

You can alter the ingredients to make it paleo, use cocoanut oil ; not sure if you are allowed splenda. Which is why I like Atkins-- a little more freedom. ANd I LOVE home made blue cheese dressing to go on my greens. YUM. Hate the bottled stuff.

I sleep a LOT better since permanently going low carb-- not more waking up at night, and watching TV for hours. I have much more energy too. No afternoon slump-- none. Love it!!

Thanks for the recipe, sounds good! For sweetening, I typically use a little honey or some pure maple syrup. I can't handle fake sweeteners, got a roaring sensitivity to them. For fats, we use a lot of evoo, grass fed butter (manna from heaven!), and coconut oil. I've kind of strayed from the original rigid guidelines I had set out for us after doing a bunch of reading when we first started, but overall our diet is way better than it used to be. Like you, I have learned to listen to my body. It's amazing how much better I feel, and I don't feel deprived the least bit. I don't even count the calories or carbs any more, which is a blessing since I'm starting down the path of old-dom and weight loss is a difficult battle. Man, I miss my 20's, I ate everything in sight, sat on my butt all day driving a truck, and still lost weight.

Waiting for photos.

For you that are dieting. I am thinking you have to do a certain diet..because of health problems? Or are you trying to lose weight? I've been losing some weight, I'm just doing my own thing, counting calories, but I've noticed, I eat better when I am trying to lose weight. So, that probably says something about how I ate before, and no wonder I'm trying to lose weight. I'm excited..I've lost a whole size since I started.

Congrats! It's so nice to actually see the results of all your hard work, and it keeps us all motivated to do even better.

I wasn't told to start dieting. It was much like when I quit smoking. I woke up one morning and said, 'I'm tired of feeling lousy'. I was pre-diabetic, morbidly obese, and my blood pressure was in the prehypertension range. I'd crawl out of bed, and flounder through the day. Retirement got to shoulder a lot of the blame - once I retired my activity level dropped to about zero. Once I started eating better, I almost overnight started feeling much better. I dropped 50 pounds and my doctor was thrilled at all my lab values. I practically bounce out of bed in the mornings now, and the weight loss has allowed me to feel better about doing even more moving around, which is leading to more weight loss and better overall health, etc.

Here's my forecast for the day:

* ACCUMULATIONS... SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 4 TO 6 INCHES... ALONG WITH AROUND A TRACE OF ICE.

Okay, really. It's April 12th. Time to get a move on, Spring.

We had several days of 60's and gorgeous here, and then it all went to heck pretty quickly. Cold, rainy, and really windy. Gettin' real tired of it, mother nature. I'm getting cabin fever here and it's time to get cracking on outside projects.

I am sorry for you all that are still getting snow and ice. Here, we will get the mowers out this weekend because the grass, clover, and other spring weeds have made the lawn look shaggy.

didn't finish reading past this post.
have your brother make the payments. They really don't care who pays it as long as it is paid for. Mistake was letting them know something. Still when ever I pay the missus bill, they cash the check or money. No where does it says the check has to be from a certain person. How do you think Parents get stuck with their adult childrens bills. sheesh...
good luck.

Oh yea, I died but the devil kicked my *** out of hell and the Lord said, maybe next time, so here I am, darn it......

A good old boy system. THe new generation of doctors must meet the requirements of the older doctors, makes for very slow change and a fraternity that requires obedience to the rules or doctors don't get their degree or employment.Add that to the fact that there is sooooo much information now that no one person can know it all, however I get frustrated when I know more than a doctor about a specific area and get knocked down or otherwise poo-poo'd by an MD. One day when I had a nutrition question for my vet, she actually said I knew more than she did. SHe was very refreshing. I"m in charge of my own health, I can take or leave what a physician advises; MD's are not the gods they pretend to be. Why else do we get second opionions?

such wonderful opinions.

I do not slag off farmers, beat on teachers, smack around cops.

Please give us medical people the same respect. Most of have good intentions ... and good ethics

Sorry ,I responded to your first short response.

Hence I try to produce more and more of my own food. Still working on it. THe best we can do, imo, is to pick the better of two choices, when we have a choice. We do need to continue to improve the food supply little by little. IT is not a perfect system is it?
