The Old Folks Home

They are all lovely shots. Makes me long for a vacation.

It's still raining here, and it's cold enough that we've got the pellet stove on again.

I was out rat hunting... since you've last had a rat update we bought an electronic rat zapper (they stayed far away from that) and tried a different type of water bucket to no avail. I've continued with the have a heart traps, glue traps and snap traps.

Today BF purchased a 17 gauge (fires bbs and pellets) air rifle for me to shoot the rats with. I used the 3 sided goat shed as a "blind" and a rain shield. Unfortunately the rats didn't come out tonight. They're usually out between 2030 and 2130. I stayed out until 2100. I'm unsure if they're not coming out on account of the rain, or they smelled/heard me or they were just coming out later than usual.

I think I'm going to need some night vision goggles, a lot of caffeine and a day off work to recuperate.

You are starting to act like Bill Murray's character in Caddy Shack.

Maybe you could go to "rent-a-(jack)Russell' (terrier) - use a couple (it will bring out their competitive instincts) and then return when the job is gone.

best ratter ever.

Had one growing up. One of the best dogs I ever had. One Christmas morning my mom was out walking her and she lunged into the brush on the side of the road and came out triumphantly with a mouse and ate it the next few feet. My mom was

I like Rent A Russell. Similar to the rent a goat program to clear your land of brush. Chickens do, too. I wonder why no one does the rent-a-chicken program? I was in the run last night waiting for the last of the idiot newbies to find their way to the door (this is apparently VERY HARD) and get inside, and was looking at the complete lack of anything green in the run and within neck reaching distance through the fence.

This was the spot I chose for the chicken coop BC (before chickens). Silly me actually spent some time clearing out some of the brush.

Now:

Jack Russells are not my ideal pet dog. Met the sweet ones, and met the all business ones. THey all were intent on killing everything. YEars ago, cleared a barn of all the wood rats in a few weeks. Hose into the tunnels, out runs rats, McGee grabs- shakes- races to next one. 6 in a matter of seconds was his best effort. Very impressive. Just don't pat him.

Years ago, Hubby and I had a little mutt that was sort of like that. Phipps was a sweet little dog, loved people, though never in her life did she lick anyone. But man, she would sit all day with her nose at a mouse hole, trembling with eagerness to get at the thing. We had some rats that moved into our pump house once, and when we discovered them and let her at them, she, too, wiped them out in a matter of seconds. Prey drive can be a frightening thing to see in action!
