The Old Folks Home

Here are photos of the visiting peacock. I took these the first evening I saw him in my yard.

.

.

He IS a juvenile cock, right? Not a hen?

In any case, he's hung around for three days now. I have named him "Kevin" after the "snipe" in the movie UP!

It's been so hot I have only gone outside for very short periods of time to complete flock chores .... and check to see where Kevin is meandering. He has been VERY interested in the coop pop door.

Linda,
He and/or she is quite stunning. What a find! Doesn't matter who found who.

Hard to believe it's as hot as it is across the country. We didn't hit 60 today, and I built a fire in the woodstove. Wish it would get warm and stop raining, my garden is drowning.

Maybe you could put up some flyers in the neighborhood and the local feed stores to find the owners? I bet they are sick that he's missing.
You, I, and any other BYCer might feel that way, but I've been assured by my neighbors he was probably dumped. I am still going to post a notice. Because I would like to keep him, I am trying to figure out how an owner could describe him so he doesn't get to be somebody else's "free" peacock. I have never wanted a peacock, because of that scream they make. I couldn't see deliberately obtaining something which would be obnoxious. Kevin has been very quiet for the three days he's been here. Now and again he "barks." I may change my mind if he gets noisy. Meanwhile, he's MY free peacock. He's awfully pretty and quite fun to watch. (As if the rest of my flock isn't..... Ha! )

If his wings are clipped, then that part of the discription. Also if both wings are clipped, that's why he's still flying. They need one wing clipped in order to be off balance so they don't fly AS HIGH, but Peas can fly pretty high up. I think the other birds told him that your place was a cool place to live and he just showed up.

SCG, you can take some of this heat from us. It's aweful. I went out and feed the animals this morning and then went back out a while ago and took the hose to everything and everybody. Praying my rabbits don't have problems. Their fresh ice bottle haven't frozen yet.

there is a local bycer named kev who has peacocks. maybe you got the name subliminally but its a cool name for your bird. if you end up with another, i vote for gavin.

Linda-- when I found a jack russell, I put up general "found dog" signs and got LOTS of calls. Sad really how many people looking for missing dogs. I asked for a description of the missing dog, never offering a description first. After almost 3 months I found a good home for her ( and her puppies to be!)

KEvin is lovely. Hope you keep him.

Bird found, in the area of ............ Call and identify. PHONE

Leave your machine on to field calls. The message tells them to leave a discription of the bird they lost and a phone number. If it is their bird, you will call them back.

Run it for two weeks and if no one knows the bird, he's yours. If someone says they lost a peafowl, call and ask if the wings are clipped, if it is a male of female, what color the leg band is (I know there is not one, they should as well) how long the tail feathers are, and ask if they have a picture of the bird they lost.

You will likely get calls about finches, parakeets, canaries, parrots, pigeons, etc. The return call can be simply, "I'm sorry, the bird I found was not a cockatiel. I hope you find yours."

I'm not sure what the law is in your state, but here, you have to make a "reasonable effort" before you decide to keep anything you find. Here, two weeks in the paper is considered by the court a standard, reasonable effort. You can get into legal trouble if you just keep it.

I hope it was dumped and no one calls at all! Then Kevin can relax and settle in. Of course, that means that you will have to buy Katherine!!
