The Old Folks Home

You should post that recipe.

Here's my rat update...

We used one of the smoke bombs today. Got the goats out into the chicken run, clogged all the rat holes but one and I was the lucky one that got to arm and light the bomb and shove it in the hole.

We wait... and nothing. BF says maybe the bomb stopped working, so go distract the chickens and the goats at the other end of the house and I'll dig up the bomb and see what happened.

I'm at the other end of the house when I start to hear gun shots.

It was apparently at that moment that the rats started fleeing the nest, from one of the openings that we apparently didn't tamp down well.

Holy moly.

Rats everywhere.

We tamp the rat hole back down, and wait. And wait.

Then I decide they have to be dead and I'm going to dig up their house and find dead rat bodies everywhere and I will be full of joy.

As we're digging it up I can see rat heads popping out behind BF's shovel.

The most gigantic rat (and I used to live in Baltimore) came out of one of the holes and got away. I was shocked at how big it was.

Total death tally? Zero.

We failed.

There was at least 10 escaped rats.
I love this story!

When the rain stops, the liquid bait will get them. Your chickens will be happier too. That many big rats will bother them at night.

SCG .. it's a shame the mental power of your cheer squad all over the world is not enough to overpower the Rats and evict them permanently! Sitting here in Aus hoping that you win. Fingers crossed!!

So far today I've lost my best and sweetest Lionhead buck and I've sprayed down everyone and all the pens and cages 6 times. It's 108 and I can't breath. Need AC for the animals. Heck I need AC for us! At least 2 weeks of this. I'm dead tired after the se3cond day. Yesterday I thought I was so on it.

Thanks, guys. I have never NOT beaten something before. This is entirely foreign and horrible.

We're loading up the bucket traps now for tonight. Maybe since we disturbed their house they'll be out foraging for food again.

I can only hope.

How frustrating about that rat nest and them out maneuvering the bomb! Maybe the bomb would scare them off. The rain has been bad here everyday for the last week. DH watched our large Buff Orp "Gertie" catch a mouse the other day and all of the others running after her to get them some. LOL Have not seen any rats yet.

Aaaw, wolftracks, sorry to hear about your loss

So sorry about your loss. I heard yesterday about the heat out on the West Coast. They reported that they expected 129 in the Mohave dessert and the heat wave spreads up to the Canadian border and as far as Montana. It has been very hot and humid here in the East with violent storms in the afternoon the last 5 days. Today is the first day we have not seen any rain. I believe that will be different tomorrow. So far our chickens are managing well. I feel back for our 4 broody hens. They are all laying on some fertile eggs. Hopefully it will not be much longer for them.
