The Old Folks Home

Wolftracks sorry I came in so late re: your locked out of house drama. I've had things like that happen to me but, I cannot take heat above high 70's, so I know they would have found me slumped over by the side of the road. It's funny but, when you really need it none of the neighbors or friends EVER see you and offer a ride. Yah real funny like when it's a ^%$&$## downpour and people just wave to me because I love to walk. Not during thunder and lightning strokes People!!

Anyway in my long ago 20's when I had no hips at all- I used to shimmy thru the dog door to get back in the house. Had to crawl on hands and knees thru gravel dog run- ouch & icky. I can tell you the dogs were very surprised to see me. Those were little dog doors for Cocker spaniels and boy it hurt!! But I was so proud of myself to find a way inside. Well that was ages ago, the dogs are long gone, the doors are all bricked over, and I have 'puffed up" so much I couldn't squeeze thru a barn door. Oh yes,I bought several sets of keys and usually carry three with me whenever I leave the house. I get paranoid about it and after reading of your situation - even more so.

Hi everyone! Happy 4th of July! Here are my fireworks for the 4th! I grew them in my straw bale gardens. I started a straw bale garden this spring and I could not be happier with how it is turning out!
I can't believe how easy it is to grow tons of melons and veggies using this method. No weeding, no tilling, just water and fertilizer! Also, It raises the bed up so that you are not bending over. I seriously have never seen anything so easy to do! I will probably be able to sell some of my melons to help pay for some of my chicken feed.

This is how I started out, this spring in March. I set 4 bales side by side with the cut ends up.
Then I fertilized them with 10-10-10. and watered them for about 4 weeks until it was time to plant.

Setting them up this way gives me 3 spaces between the bales, to which I added potting mix in the cracks and placed my seeds according to the seed pack directions. I added 3 more sections today and I am getting them ready to plant some things in them this fall. I will probably plant, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, savoy cabbage and lettuce. I plan to tie welded wire fencing around the bales to hold them solidly together. That way I can just add more straw to the top of the bale sections and keep them going every year.

Ta,Da! A few months later I have about 20 or 30 'lopes growing from this section.
I feed them fairly heavy with Miracle Grow every week.

On this section I have about 20 or more Sugar Baby watermelons growing.
They should be ready in about 2 weeks!
I hope you enjoyed seeing my little garden project!

Note cards!!!!

Clever garden beds!! Will remember that for next year to speed up the melons as we have a shorter season than you.
Thanks Arielle! Yes note cards would be nice, if I only had time to do all of that! I stay really busy taking care of my small poultry farm and my rabbits. I can't believe how quickly the melons have grown using this method. I live in NC and we have been getting TONs of rain lately. We have had over 6 inches of rain in the last 48 hours and it is thundering outside right now. We live on a high spot, so it is not as soggy as some of the neighboring areas. I am not having to water the bales right now, but usually I water them every day and fertilize them heavily each week.
I'm glad you enjoyed seeing my little garden. You could set up a few this year for a fall crop of cold weather veggies!

Why go anywhere else when you can see it from you own front porch! I had to come in, the smoke was getting to me..
Our neighbors spend moo goo $$'s on this stuff!

Happy 4th everyone!

Nice melon plants, bunny. I'm jealous. The weeks and weeks of rain have me growing some nice mushroom beds, but that's about it.

Today is my last day of work, then I head to WVa to go to a week long class with my mom - starts with milking a cow and goes to making cheese with it. We'll also do a soapmaking class. I'm excited about the class, but mostly excited about the break from work. YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
