The Old Folks Home

At least you have something going. That looks great. We also have to find a spot for our garden. Afraid it's very small this year. A pumpkin plant in this photo, two tomato plants, some chard, for me and the chickens.. :) and three Sunflower plants that will get huge, just for the fun of it, and, for the chickens when the seeds are ripe. I also have a couple of Yellow Crookneck squash in a different area.

My herbs didn't make it in the pots I put them in. Not sure what I did wrong. :(
cute little garden! I need to try some sunflowers!
Most people would be surprised how many plants you can squeeze and grow in a small area! I worked at a nursery for a little while and loved it! I learned so much about planting and growing, grafting. Just loved it!

I am teaching someone to make jam today. We're going in a few minutes to pick strawberries. I made some regular and some vanilla bean strawberry jam last Sunday, and it is gooooooood.
We have wild blackberries all over this property, and I pick them all summer and either freeze or can them. Made a batch of black and blue (berry) spice jam last fall which was to die for. I'll be making that again this year.

I really do enjoy making jam and canning things. I only learned last year. Someone on the Maine BYC thread was kind enough to invite this stranger into her house to show her how to can. I'm just passing along the knowledge to a friend's wife today. Dilly Beans were my gateway drug to canning. Funny how something so innocuous could result in me having an entire pantry lined with cans going into winter.

Oh yum! I love the sound of the black and blueberry jam! I might have to try some of that this year. The Strawberry vanilla bean sounds delicious! I make Peach Cobbler jam and preserves. If you add vanilla bean, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a dash of salt to your peach preserves, you will have your family fighting over the jars. I had to hide some of it! I also add Peach Schnapps to a few jars of peach preserves without the spices. It is wonderful as a topping on some Edy's Grand Vanilla ice cream!

What a neat little garden! Everything looks so immaculate! I love the solar lights and I think the pumpkin vines will be really pretty growing across your retaining wall. Be sure to share some photos of your veggies when they come in!

I just made pickles with this: http://store.mrswagesstore.com/pickles.html
It was Sooooo easy, quick, and they came out great. I did the Zesty Bread & Butter. Next I am trying the Dill. They have so many varieties.

Somewhere, in my recipe collection I have a microwave Bread and Butter Pickle recipe. I'll see if I can find it. It is good for making tiny batches of pickles to eat fresh and no canning is involved. They taste crazy delicious too! I'll see if I can find it. My DIL uses Mrs. Wages for her pickles and they are great!

Did I read someone mentioned Edy's ice cream??? Oooh, ooh I am done for the day.

Really love the sound of Black & Blueberry Jam - I bet that would fly off the shelves at Trader Joe's. You could make a fortune. Sounds like they beat each other up in the canning process.
