wow the Pita Pinta chicks are beautiful, I've never heard of that breed

They come from a little Island off of Spain. These will be Mostly Black with white Mottling, like Mottled Javas. There is a another color pattern that is white with Black Mottling.

I visited their parents(Actually I hatched them for Megan last year) in Clayton, California.



They look like Mottled Javas but they are not as timid.

You know what those pita pinta chicks remind me of? Exchequer chicks..they also grow up to be a mottled bird. I hatched some a while back..here are some pics.

Thank you for the picture! Black and white mottled chickens look very nice to me. I am imagining them in my layer yard now.

Megan says they are egg laying machines and one of the eggs was the larges I have hatched yet--way into Jumbo!

Greetings from across the Pacific.

I will be putting eggs into lockdown tonight. They are from the chicks we hatched in December/January. Our first non-shipped generation.

The Muscovy are now sausages. We had duck sausage in a ratatouille with risotto for lunch.

We have a fence to build and 4-6 coops to finish this week so it will be busy.

I have not seen a rat yet. Hoping to see more of the Maine variety here on byc soon

About 10 wks. Didn't weigh them-- but bigger than anything in the grocery store though lacked some breast muscling proportionately. I have been feeding fermented feed mostly and this slows the growth down. But I like that they get a lot of fluids with every bite. Poops more normal , too. I have another 14 ( jun11) to grow out--one already died from flip, bird on back and legs in running position--so I think that is flip. Not sure though.

I don't like this method of growing them out in a coop and pen, they just sit and eat and poop and poop and pooop and then stand in it. Barely use the pen area. I suspect the feeders and waterer are spaced apart to make them move-- something I read last night, so maybe a larger area is better.-or put food opposite end of water.IDK.

Don't think I will try them again-- keeping a couple of the hens though!

Cross them with my biggest rooster.

I raised some last November, I got them to 13 weeks and it started to warm up and stink up the place. I had them with the other chicks I had gotten at the same time. For the most part that's all they did sit eat, and poop. Although I will say, the rooster I had actually got up and went outside daily, only cause that's where the rest of the flock were getting there treats, but hey he got up and moved. As for crossing them with anything... I don't think they will make it to breeding age. They will probable have a heart attack before that since they are bred to be harvested at 6-8 weeks. I had gotten some broiler booster from McMurray when I had ordered them because I read that they suffer from broken legs from gaining so much weight. Although I think i read somewhere on BYC somebody did get a hen to 20 wks, it laid a few eggs and then stopped.
