The Old Folks Home

That BBC Doc link I posted has a piece in it stating that if a hen has damage to an ovary it will become more of a rooster, but unable to mate.

Hi, I'm pretty sure my guy is a total rooster, but since I have him in a pen with another rooster and a hen he has become somewhat protective and motherly! The other rooster is very docile too, and loves to be snuggled. He does not sit on the eggs however and has happily eaten many of them. I raised them together as chicks and they get along really well, so I have just left well enough alone. They are really a happy group and are super friendly. He crows, and acts normally other than sitting on the eggs. I have never seen him breeding with the hen. Is it possible he is a priest? Maybe I should have named him Father Happy Feet!
In the wild, so many of the male birds take an active role in setting on the eggs and helping to rear the young.
I have wondered if our domestication of these birds have "bred" out some of the natural instincts of this pattern of behavior in the poultry world.
Just a thought..............

We have changed a lot of behaviors by our breeding choices. For example, I don't believe the wild ancestors of the chicken lay eggs for nearly as long a season as the domestic birds do. Several modern breeds are known to be "seasonal layers" with much shorter laying seasons (Bantam Cochins, for example). Laying just a few eggs and then brooding them is normal behavior for almost all bird species, yet "normal" for most of our chicken breeds is to lay persistently and only go broody periodically. There are some breeds that are known to be non-setters; brooding behavior has been bred out of almost all but a few oddball individuals in those breeds in an effort to produce more eggs.

Social behaviors have been modified, too. There are some wild bird species that are very social, but they don't engage in fights to the death as roosters are known to do. Offhand, I'd bet that the family groups of the wild species are a lot smaller than most domestic flocks; it takes some "taming down" just to tolerate that many other birds around, especially other males. And while we like our roosters to defend their hens from what we consider predators, we aren't at all happy when they put us in those ranks! An awful lot of roosters have been consigned to freezer camp simply because they have been a little too close to their wild forefathers on this score.

Very funny little rooster you got there. I was going to tell all of you that if you are wanting to send my mom a good wish she has made a facebook page called: Courageous Callahan. You can get a little more on her story there. She is a two year Breast cancer survivor and now has stage 4 Bone cancer and stage 4 lung cancer. She is going in for her second radiation treatment today. She does one hour of radiation five days a week. 8 chemo pills a day, and a chemo shot once a month.

I will keep your mom in my thoughts and prayers. I will check out her story too. God can work miracles. I will pray for a miracle. Cancer is an awful thief. I know you must all be going through a very hard time. Blessings and love, to you and your family!

And my prayers for your mom.

As you know, I have a personal interest in the big C-- and I"m determined to tackle cancers at the nutritional level. I eat some 1/4 cup raw ground flax seed a day; pick kale from the garden. Try new recipes to keep eating lots of veg to fight cancer. I eat apple seeds too. FOrgot to buy the alfalfa sprouts today. WIll get mung bean sprouts and do a stir fry this week. I not as scared by the cancer as I am the chemo and radiation.

Cell phone rang at 5:30 tonight. Only a few people have my number so I pulled over figuring it was DH. Yup, calling to say he was ok and had been in a 5 car pile up.

. He is so tall he removes his hat while driving. Of course his vehicle is totalled-- it took the brunt of the 5th car hitting his (nearly) stopped vehicle at nearly full speed, and the domino effect damged 3 more vehicles in front of him.
